Shot Blasting ?????

Has anybody done any shot blasting? I had a call about striping a handicap parking area(1000 sqft) in a garage so it could be layout in another way. I went and did a test blast to see how long it would take. I figured it was in the 8 hour range. The customer stated that in the past he had it done by a shot blaster and it only took 2 - 3 hours and no dust. I be doing research on the equipment and it is $$$$$ but found a place that rents them. Just woundering if anyone have any experince with it.

If you dont have shot blasting equipment stay away from it. You will wreck a whole lot of windows on cars for a little cash. Stay out of ramps. Thats for the big guys. If you do get the bid there will probably be an inspector. Let me know if it does work out

Blastrac systems are quick and easy to use.they have small 110v systems that should work out good for a parking space, just make sure you dont leave it running for more than a few seconds in one spot.you can also use a scarifier or floor grinder like a edco type machine for quick removals of coatings.blastrac type systems do pepper some but mostly only when the floor is not flat or the guards are worn but you can improvise with a make shift shield to keep bb's from going everywhere.you can do it,your a blaster

Bulldog,

What media did you use to run your test with? Do you know if the stripping was oil or water based? The only stripe removal I have done was outside. The oil based paint can be a bear, you have to be careful when bidding. I spoke with a fellow blaster that said it took him over 6 hours once to remove an arrow in a turning lane.

What grit? How much did you blast? How'd it come off? Was there multiple layers of paint? Crushed glass...isn't it wonderfull.

Re: Shot Blasting ?????

30-70 grit, we blasted about 100sf and it was coming off good. there was two coats of stain. I like using crushed glass it is great. The person I was trying it for did not like the dust(I do not know what he was thinking it is blasting). I could have tarped the area and contained the dust and still have done the job about $700 cheaper than what the shot blasting cost him.

Re: Shot Blasting ?????

This guy did not care about the cost. They have budgets that are in place for certain kinds of painting and blasting. He saved himself some money getting you to try it out. He did not like the dust because you did not use a blast track or what he is used to. This is the same as you're trying out new equipment that you knew you would not use. he got a free job. i.e. free paint for a small job or a new abrasive. Stay out of ramps. The ramps in cities are for the bigger contractors I have lost a lot of money to these jobs.

Im not 100% but im pretty sure its a fiberglass body which needs to be soda blasted. Soda will not warp or pit the panels. Some experienced blasters may use other media, but i wouldnt recommend it.

Re: Shot Blasting ?????

Steel grit will cut faster and leave a better anchor tooth profile because of it jagged edges.shot are round like bb's and bounce all over the place, both are mainly used in systems that recycle them over and over until they break down to dust.
I have never used it but from what i have seen and talked to others who have soda would be the choice.they say you can blast chrome, rubber, glass and plastic with out any damage or need for protection with the right settings.

If you are a Vet. man the higher prices should not be of any concern. If you have enough money to afford one of America's best. 1,000$ up to 3,000$ for stripping with soda or glass should not be a problem for you. A seventy Vet. Depending on the number of coats of paint should first be blasted with glass and then be gently stripped with soda. That is if it has not been mashed up. Most of them have been. I guess you have a Sting Ray I have not yet had a guy who has made money from one of them. If this car is special strip it. If it is just another vete sand it by hand and paint it. I know it will save you $$$$

Re: Shot Blasting ?????

I was on a job where we used a Blastrac shotblaster with steel shot. We used it for profiling the floor for a new coating. It worked very well on the concrete. Anything soft on the floor was not removed, like gum, caulking etc. It took only a few hours to do about 7200sf. And the equiptment was new to us. It was very quick and very effective. You could have some issue with some shot escaping, especialy on uneven surfaces, so make sure there there is nothing expensive too close (within 10ft, I would guess).

Here is a pic of the profile we achieved and what will happen if you leave it in one spot for more than a second.
