Panderson 2414
This site is for Sandblasting and coatings. I'm getting tired of this soda blasting crap. I have an sx13 and a pmb pot. Is there are any one who wants to make some cash out there. We should talk the about your next six months. Who has got out into the world and made some cash. You guys with your soda blasters best grab your ass. If you are not on the edge you will be soon.

Re: Panderson 2414
The market is going into a down turn. I have been through this. I have 400,000 square foot of steel and concrete locked in for 08'. I have no soda blasting locked in or needed thus far. March is the start of the season. We all have one month to get ready to go. My company has been rebuilding equipment and getting ready to go. The only thing I have heard on this site is about "whats everyone doing or I lost a job or its to far away". Its time to go my friends they make thousands of gallons of paint per day its has to be used. Everywhere you look something has to be stripped and recoated, do not limit yourselves. The thing each one of us has to do is sell yourself. You had the balls to go out on your own and people respect that. Know your trade and get the help of local industrial or commercial coating reps. These guys have a salary based on how much they sell. I have a rep. that has gotten me jobs because he likes my workmanship. These people have accounts that are already established. I have gone through some damn hard times, I dont only have myself to think of anymore. I started with one pot and a 185 ingersollrand . I know what it is like to starve that is why I get pissed at people. Here are some tips, I come from the midwest In certain counties bids will be let for under 25,000 without public review, the armex no. 7 double venturia blast nozzle is the best on the market for soda and only soda, use a thread cap if you are not using a water ring. If you bid a coal tar removal job it takes triple the time to get it clean I **** hate coal tar. If you are ever on a job that someone threatens to stop progress because of safety or dust concerns threaten to quit, works every time. If some one claims that you overpriced say I got many of other projects going I cant get to you. If they are cheap they will walk if they want quality they will pay. Instead of choking your pot crimp your hose over at the end away from the nozzle and the holder. If you cant buy an air dryer make one take an old l.p. tank an put and inlet and an outlet on it. Fill it up with dessicant and find a way to cool the air before it enters the tank, old radiators work well.

Re: Panderson 2414
That's why I joined this site. To learn and to grow. I am where you started out at. I have a blast pot I bought from a source outside of the country and have a Kaeser 210cfm compressor. I started out soda blasting but have been trying to move into other areas. I have done only one building which was a two story bank that was nearly 100 years old and blasted the exterior clean. Wednesday of this week was the first bid I put in for an interior restoration on a 5 story building. It has a large service elevator that I can fit my compressor into to take it to any level. One of the main reasons I bought my compressor that way so I was more mobile than anyone else. Being new and looking for anything to increase revenue I added roofing cleaning to my services. Very profitable avenue also. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated as I would like to grow this into a full time business.

Dough 6423,
I have not posted to this site for a while. The fact is that there a couple of guys who post here on the regular that I was trying to get them worked up. You will get to know them Bull, kill and plaza. Good guys. I met a guy from Cincinnati this year he told me it is an old town with a crap load of steel in it. Good market for you. Make sure that elevator you talked about will hold your compressor and equipment. Whats your temp. during the mid day there. I'm at neg 11 degrees |

Re: Panderson 2414
Doug, any pics of your equipment? Any Moisture problems with soda? Isnt your city a populated city?
Pananderson, no doubt you know your S H I T ! The problem i am facing right now i that I live in a heavily populated city where sandblast is close to impossible. I only see blast done onto our bridges and highway overpasses. Nothing else. With a number 7 nozzle, i cannot use my 210 cfm compressor, it consumes 254 cfm at 100 psi. I am limited to a number 4 or 5 nozzle. So do you think if i buy a smaller dessicant dryer, will it work? How often do you change dessicants? If someone (other than the person who contracted you) threatens you on a job because of dust any safety, just tell them you'll walk off the job? Personally, i dont think they will care. |

Re: Panderson 2414
plazaman,
I live in the middle of no where. I have to run down I-90 three hundred miles for my first job this year. I already told you how to build a cheap air drier. The no 7 nozzle will reduce the pressure that you blast at but it will increase the no. of square feet you get done. I used a new tool this year called a sabre stick, bazzoka nozzle, or a super stick. It is made by Kennametal find a distributor. It is a no. 6 nozzle that produces a no. 8. pattern. The key to this is to stay back two to three feet. It will turn your 210 into a 375. My 375's dont come of half throttle. It saved me thousands of gallons of bio-dielse last year. Thats bio-diesle at 2.02 a gal Last edited by user20594; 01-31-2008 at 11:04 PM. |

Re: Panderson 2414
This nozzle is a new. I did not believe the guy who let me use it. The first job I used it on was a pool. It did not do on concrete what it does on blue steal. This is a 450$ nozzle I told the guy he could stick it. That was before we started our tank painting . It takes you from 1000sq white blast a day to over 2500

Re: Panderson 2414
SOS.Some good tips, but other wise lame advise.
what a disappointment you are, stating the obvious.living in the middle of nowhere and doing work in the middle of nowhere has it's advantages, but my friend in the real world of rules, regulations and contracts walking off and quiting a job is not an option.living in no mans land is not an option.safety, profit, quality and environment is not an option,a must where ever blasting is done and no more whinning about walking off a job .your supposed to be a professional so act like one from start to finish.400k where and what.BTW dont be a hater. Re: Panderson 2414
Plazaman,
I'll try and get some pics up tomorrow. I just wanted to check in real quick to see what was happening. Any pics you want specifically?? The compressor is a Kaeser M57 210CFM you can check that out online. My blast pot is stainless steel. I plan on adding another water separator this spring. Right now I leave the current WS cracked open so it continually bleeds out the water. During this past humid summer the soda stayed dry doing it that way. I am going to see what Kaeser has also for the compressor to help reduce the problem. I hear regs in NY are pretty tough. |

Re: Panderson 2414
plazaman,
That is the nozzle. Make sure to check on it before you buy. The big selling point on it is that is produces a no 8 blast with a no 6 size. I intend to go out tomorrow and take some pics. I would like to back up all of my preaching with some real photo proof. I have thought about how to help you guys out. When I go out to look for work I follow railways. Products have to be moved across county. I have found that along the lines there is always a depot be it grain, oil, cars or any other commodity every person in this country needs every day. These depots have to be maintained. They can be in the middle of nowhere or in cities. I have chosen on purpose to stay out of populated areas, however I also do work on pipelines and intend to let Isobcal have it on my next post. |

Re: Panderson 2414
ibsocal,
How many years as an owner do you have under your belt? I have worked for some of the biggest natural gas companies in the U.S. I know what rules and regulations are. Most of the regulations on these jobs keep out the smaller contractors. I have had inspectors that should not be allowed to have kids let alone run a job. If you seeking advice on this site and already understand all the rules of being a larger contractor I could use your advice. I have question for you. What coating is there for the internal containment of Bio-diesle. I have used Tnemec's series 61 it failed. Carboline, Ameron ,and sherwin have no answers I have also got ahold of gulf coast and ppg. No luck .International could not help me either. I would like your input on this matter. |

Re: Panderson 2414
ibsocal,
The steel and concrete I have to coat this year is in the Mid-West. How much do you have locked in for bids this year... I already know my profits it's going to be a record for me. How bout you? What size of compressors do you run? I have 375 Ingersoll Rands I think they get the best fuel economy. I have been asked why I don't run big compressors I would rather have a whole bunch little ones that support one guy than have a big one go down and have four guys sitting around. I could buy a big pots I like 6.5 cu foots because I know that every thirty to forty minutes they should be refilled. That saves me $$ on abrasive instead of running all day on a big pot and losing 3000 lbs on a bad valve. What do you think? |

Re: Panderson 2414
bio diesel is kinda new so i would give ole willie nelson's people a call and ask how they store it.me would try bare metal no coatings.or i would call some friends @ international, devoe or pro-line.i have had my hands on sandblasting and coatings projects worth mega millions of dollars with real live nace inspectors working on the water front in san diego where we are the pioneers of protecting the environment expecting 99 percent of the time a sspc-10 on government projects.i was a blaster painter qc inspector snapper leadman foreman and supt with crews of hundreds.
