Re: Newbie Too Site

Hi guys I posted an introduction a few minutes ago my interest is in soda blasting especially boats as I am from the marine trade. I think the comments I have read over the past few days are just fantastic i think this is a great site and sincerely appreciate the comments made by the experienced guys and I sympathize and have an empathy for those just starting out like me. I have been researching soda blasting for awhile now and can relate quite easily to the issues that are raised and the answers offered by the pros. I hope I can contribute to your forums and I know I will benefit from any advice offered,Thanking you in advance. ( Karekare ) Neil !

Re: Newbie Too Site

Welcome!! I started with a 1.5 Clemco pot and still use my 185 Atlas Copco compressor and my 1.5 for small jobs. I now have a Schmidt 600 and don't miss using the 1.5 on big jobs. You will get tired of loading that thing every 15 minutes when it is 90* out side with a helmet and blast suit on. Read back through some of my first posts, some of your questions will be answered.

Re: Newbie Too Site

Heavy rusted stuff bout 1.5 hrs. Normal 2 hrs if I’m lucky, really it depends on what profile I am trying to achieve. I would say if you get over 2 hrs of continuous blasting on a 600#’s you are doing pretty well. Me, I like to take a break after an hour. My age is starting to show its self any longer than that.

Re: Newbie Too Site

I will have to say that with a medium abrasive and running at least 375 CFM and 125 psi with a number 6 nozzle you can expect to get about 30min. out of a 600lb. blast pot. If you are using Dupont Starblast which is a very fine abrasive, but cleans rust off of bare steel really fast you can get about a hour out of a pot. If your getting longer run times from running a medium abrasive, then you really need to turn up the abrasive flow. Your production numbers will come up fast. The last time I blasted which was a little over a month ago I blasted 12 pieces of loose pipe which had a surface area of about 1,200 sq.ft. and it took me less than four hours to put a SSPC-SP10 Near-White blast on them. My pot was lasting about 25min. each. I blasted that day because the day before a blaster on the job that had about 10 year exp. as he said only got 6 pieces done and it took him almost 7 hours. So, to prove a point, I got under the hood and showed him that I knew what I was talking about. The day after I blasted, he was able to get 9 pieces done in about six hours. The next day, he did not even bother coming in to work . Now these numbers on how long a 600lb. pot will last is from continous blasting. Not stopping until the pot runs out. If your doing a lot of starting and stopping then that is going to depend upon you. But you can expect about a half hour of actual blast time.
