Im Back And Gonna Try And Be More Regular On Here
Things have been going good.. I just built a small metal building on my property 18"x21"x8' so I can blast in the rain. Was looking to rent a place but the over head is to high. I am still trying to get establisher. I have learned one thing in this line of work, always stick to what you went to do!!! If you go to blast a dump truck bed for an accepted price, then do what you came to do. If they keep throwing things in front of you, start to renegotiate all over, or they will get the best of you and your services.......I know that when I did the dump truck Saturday, I feel like I got my Ass kicked by 10 people today. I was using mussels I did not even know existed in the human body
but its nice seeing that pay check when you are done.. I could not imagine some of you guys blasting for 8 hours a day. I will have a better game plan the next time I tackle something like that. Concrete floors in my metal building are next so I can reclaime some of the dispensed media. Here is a pic of one side of that dump truck I did. It was dark and I used my cell phone. What do you guys charge for something like that, all four sides of a big old dump truck? |

Re: Im Back And Gonna Try And Be More Regular On Here
killzone,
I have one recomendation. Either use a proposal form such as one from Staples or Office Depot or generate one in a program like Quick books. I created one I use in Quick Books. The customer has to sign it if they accept the proposal and award me the work. I make them either fax it, mail it or give it to me personally. I also carry one in my truck that I picked up from Staples so if I need to I can do one right on the spot before any work is performed. In it I state "Any alteration or deviation from above specifications involving extra costs will be executed only upon written order, and will become an extra charge over and above the estimate. All agreements are contingent upon strikes, accidents, or delays beyond out control". I like using the Quick Books one because I can just email it. If you are awarded the work you can go back into QB's to the estimate and generate the invoice with a click of one buttom. If you would like to see a copy of my Proposal I could send you a PDF file of it. I price on a range. This I would have estimated @ 750 - 1000 for a "White Metal" Blast. Curious to know. How long did it take you? What media and grit? |

killzone,
I was going to mention and I forgot. A little bit is just good PR. but there is a point like you said that it gets to be too much. Hopefully they appreciated it and will put in a good word for you on how well you took care of them. |

Re: Im Back And Gonna Try And Be More Regular On Here
I would say a total of 2 1/2 hours of blasting, about an hour of set up and tear down, 30 min. in breaks and 30 min drive time. I used 20/40 Black Blast from Menards I used 900 to 1000 pounds at $12.00 per 100 pounds so I had about $120.00 in media and another $20.00 for fuel. I got paid $600.00 for the whole job, that left me with a profit of $460.00. for 4.5 hours of work. Thats a little over $100.00 per hour which is what my goal is for now.. I will be going back to do some other things for him next week. Here is a pic of my new blast room also. People dropping thing off to be blasted prompted me have it built. 18x21x8 with a 8x10 door and a 36" side door built on my property for $3000.00. Not a bad deal.. Oh and send me a copy of your contracts. I do use the one proposal book from Office Max. I plan on putting some concrete in so I will be able to reclaim.

killzone,
Sounds like you made good production time. what size nozzle do you you use? What was the length of the dump bed, and how high were the sides? |

Re: Im Back And Gonna Try And Be More Regular On Here
I am using a #5 nozzle with 185 CFM. Not sure on the SQ FT, its an 18 ton drump truck. This is the biggest job I have done. I thought I got my dead man fixed, but when I let off the dead man the pot does not depressurize, it keeps on blasting. I have replaced the guts and turned seals around. The only thing I havent tried yet is using the schmidt deadman hose. I am using the clemco and they are both the same size. I know that the Schmidt are two different sizes. I have reversed the lines and it gets worse so I know they are hooked up right. I do have reducers on the controls so the clemco hoses will fit. Here is a pic before I started.

i think we should start to track our production times & media usage on these jobs so others can get a feel for pricing

Re: Im Back And Gonna Try And Be More Regular On Here
Plazaman & MediaMan, send me something to my email and I will forward a copy to you. sodablast@fuse.net Also I use a expense sheet to track actual blast time on a job. Gas to and from. Compressor Fuel, and media used and well as miscellaneous expenses. I can also forward a copy of that also to anyone who wants it.
On the deadman.....I have that happen already. Once it was caused by the seal in the mixing chamber going bad. I went through everything....I mean everything. I finally called the company who again ran through everything with me again, and last but not least, I pulled the mixing chamber and sure emough the seal had gone bad and blown out. |
