Question

Help With Estimating Amt. Of Media

I am new to sandblasting and need to put a quote in to paint silos. Of course they need blasted first and i can't find anything on how to estimate the amt. of media needed. The sq. ft. of the silos is roughly 40,000 which includes the framing, ladders, catwalks, etc. If anyone can help me it would be appreciated.

Re: Help With Estimating Amt. Of Media

you really need to do a test blast in a couple different places on the silos to see how many sq ft you can do in a minute. You should know how much media you pot uses in a hour. From that you should be able to come up with the time and media needed.

Re: Help With Estimating Amt. Of Media

Wow! Huge Project, 40,000 Sq.ft really depends on how many layers of paint. Id figure 1lbs-1.5lbs for every sq.ft 40-60k lbs could be more, could be less, but id keep those numbers for quoting. If you do win the bid, I wouldnt purchase all the media at once. I would purchase some and watch how it goes from there. What kind of equipment are you using? Any Containment?

also to what sp or nace level does the blast need to be? that will also determine how much media you will need

Re: Help With Estimating Amt. Of Media

what size compressor do you plan to run? that might determine pot sizing also. does the project call for containment? the areas you blast, you might want to prime the same day also, so maybe figure half day for blast and next half for prime.

sctshf, you're right up the road from me. How's this sound. If you buy me the equipment, I'll blast it for you for just the cost of materials. Although, I don't know enough about pricing to know if that'd be good or not for both of us as I'm just kicking around getting into it as well.

Re: Help With Estimating Amt. Of Media

I dont run pounds per squre foot. I run abrasive by the pot, one pot that has 20/40 in it should run 45 mins. that is in a schmidt 650. I run small pots with enough air to them that at the nozzle they produce 135 psi that psi is enough to produce a white blasted surface on most kinds of steel. I have been a big pusher of the super stick. For my kind of work it is great . how about you? I blast paint and big steel. then coat it. I use tnemec what do you use.

Re: Help With Estimating Amt. Of Media

this is for bismark. I was in your area a couple of months ago I may have talked to you on other threads but here is the skinny. Triangle ag is a new coop that formed 20 mins north of fargo. they had another name. The job is in ulen mn. It was built by my tank company. there are three half million gallon tanks. There are also tanks that are in primer that will need over coating. use a coating that will not bubble the existing coating. I dont own the tank company Im a sub contractor for thier Iowa and wisconsin div.

I'm really trying to understand what he's talking about, but I don't at all! Not that is my business, but I can't really make sense of most of panderson's posts.

Got it! Thanks for the heads up. I'll see what I can do.
