Re: Government Work
i know its a classification system, but what exactly is it?
im currently in the process of signing up with the city to get on their bidding list. someone mentioned to me on this forum that sandblasting doesnt have much competition and i could stand a good chance in the bidding. But thinking about it more, the companies who are bidding on these projects are large industrial contractors with industrial equipment, an area i cannot touch as of yet.

Re: Government Work
PLAZAMAN,
Yes it is a system set up by the government. You (the contractor) are listed under certain "codes" that identify a company and the line of work it does. Now-as I understood it, I can use the codes to either go online (or other means) and look for work under listings that match the same codes I am listed under or I can use it to classify my company as to what type of work I do if someone else is browsing to find a contractor to do work listed with the codes I'm classified under. So I have not benefited from it, so I do not fully understand the relm of its potential possibly. So far I see it as another typical government run agency. I met with the person that over-see's North Dakota and he passed me on to his assistant who's in a seperate city than he's located in. Filled out forms, got my classification codes, and that's about the extent of it. Media Man |

Re: Government Work
I dont now anything about government and registration. I think stay away from that. It only takes one lazy ass osha or epa person to look up your number and decide to visit you for the day. Instead of working through to government find out who the engineers are that contract out the work. They are civil engineers or structural.

Re: Government Work
The Central Contractor Registry is your foot in the door. The federal government "Requests for Proposal" normally require you to be registered in CCR in order to bid on these jobs. Then it's a very competitive process in most geographical areas, and it is very difficult to unseat an incumbent contractor unless they've screwed up or the work is being repackaged into other competitive areas (i.e. for a small business set aside). Speaking of set asides, these are for companies such as hub-zones, women-owned, small disadvantaged business, and veteran's, to name a few. Still require competitive bids but against a smaller number or companies that meet size limits, either number of employees or annual revenue.
There's a whole 'nuther area where the government can shop for your services and just decide your company is "the one". These are Government Service Agency contracts and require you to complete a substantial qualification package to be listed on a "GSA Schedule", and then from the government perspective it's just like them buying things off a shelf. Real challenge to qualify as a GSA supplier, more than most small contractor businesses are up to handling, and the paperwork can be a bear. Same rules and regulations as the government uses to buy rocket fuel or IT equipment. Bottom line: You can spend a lot, emphasize lot, of time and effort preparing government proposals and never win a one. The best bet is to team with a company that's under a government contract now, and learn the lay of the land over a couple years. Although everybody has read about $600. hammers, there's very much a cap on what the government will allow for profit, and it's often in the single digits. Have many years experience with this from the military side of the house, and then as a civilian working with the Services, so that's a current snap shot. That'll teach you to bring the subject up! ![]() Bill |

Re: Government Work
Here are some of the pics I have. I don't always take pictures like I should. A one man show does not always have time for snapping photos. I keep a small portfolio af all phases of work I do. We'll see if I can get these all in one post. May have to break this up.

Re: Government Work
Thanks for the info/advice Bill in VABeach.
I a networked with a co. that has done some of this "set aside" type work. My company is "woman owned". Thats why she was interested in the NAICS. She is doing the paperwork for the CCR program. As you describe it we are probrably too small of a Co. Media Man Last edited by MEDIA MAN; 03-08-2008 at 12:51 AM. |

Re: Government Work
Media Man,
You are on the right track with the CCR, and that one is easy. The GSA Schedule is more difficult, they want the financials for the last two years. Keep up the networking on federal jobs, for a couple reasons that may be less obvious. First, it will allow you to list your subbing work in the past performance section of any of your proposals, and second, it will allow any companies you sub for to list it on their proposals thereby making it advantageous for them to have you on their team. Being a woman-owned business is a real plus with the federal government. Thanks for the opportunity to discuss this and good luck! Bill |

Re: Government Work
Let me clarify things. Why would you make a comment such as that. Why would that even enter your mind. When I say "my company is woman owned" I made reference to my wife, and have made reference to her before. WE (her and I) have her as the controlling interest so that WE can get the company one day possibly listed as 8A. I don't want to get off on the wrong side with you but your comment p***ed me off! Maybe one less beer after supper! This is not a forum for such thoughts or comments. Don't forget your struggles. A comment like that makes me think your success what ever it may be - maybe has gone to your head. I hope that I have clarified things.

Re: Government Work
Slow it way down these sites can be confusing I read a post on one of the threads that implied your company was women owned. I read it the wrong way. The information on this site is viewed by the public and also in private conversation. I am sorry and apologize to you on the world wide web. I have made mistakes before and I am really feeling like an ass about this one.

Re: Government Work
panderson,
Not a problem. All I'd like is to move forward from here. I and others on this site, which I personally can't speak for but I sense we all appreciate your input. It's nice to have someone with your level of knowledge and experiance on this forum. You had mentioned Dan Griffen in a previous thread. Is he associated with BCS? If not who's he with? I've purchased from BCS in the past and used Jason for a lot of advice before he left and before I found this forum. Media Man |
