Gordon Smith Compressors

Hello. Been around the forums a while, but new to the blasting forum.

Anyone familiar with Smith compressors? From the info I've found, Smith is/was a pretty old company from Bowling Green, KY that started converting Model A Ford engines into compressors back in the 30's. They ran a special head; used two outer cylinders to run the engine, the center cyl.'s acted as a compressor.

Apparently, they evolved with the times, building compressors from Ford
V8's. Anyway, I have a chance to bid on one built from a Ford 460, with the setup divided 4+4. I think it is rated at 166 cfm.

It's a pretty interesting setup; pretty compact for it's capacity. Trouble is, I can't find any current info on the company. I read that the co. is still around, but under a different name.

Any thoughts?

Hey, thanks Malco. I Googled Gordon Smith & Co., but didn't find much; now I see why. Too bad they went under.

The unit I looked at sold for $750. Not a bad number compared to other similar sized rigs, I didn't think.

Re: Gordon Smith Compressors

Welcome!

It is now BOSS and they apparently have quite a few of the OEM parts available.

Re: Gordon Smith Compressors

A crew working on one of the abatement projects we are monitoring is using one. Half of the Ford V8 operates as an engine, and the other half, with a custom-made head, operates as the air compressor (four of the spark plug wires are grounded to the block):

Re: Gordon Smith Compressors

How does it work when the air valve is closed?
Wouldn't it stall the engine.

Re: Gordon Smith Compressors

It's got a unloader valve just like a piston compressor does. Once the desired pressure is reached it kicks the unloader in to hold the pressure and let the engine free spin.
