Dust Containment

Hey all. I'm looking for ideas for a booth setup. Just wondering what you guys working in-shop are doing for containment. For that matter, do any of you have a mobile booth for on-site work?

The kind of work I'm talking about is mostly automotive/mobile equipment related, in terms of size.

In my area, dust containment and media disposal is a big issue, so any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Dust Containment

You can build a booth and use a tube axle fan to apply negative pressure to the booth and then use a dust sock on the fan to catch the dust. You can get the dust sock's at Eagle Industries in New Orleans. They work great. We use them all the time. As for something portable, you can build a booth using some scaffold sections and cover it with a siliconized tarp made out of airbag material. This is very light but strong material. Use the same tube axle fan the same way for dust control.

Thanks, Mr. Abbott. That's pretty close to what I was envisioning. Actually, I was considering using good, old-fashioned Visqueen, but I don't think that will last very long. I would never have thought of using airbag material. I'll dig around and see what I can find.

Re: Dust Containment

Not a problem. You can get the air bag material at Eagle Industries as well.

Re: Dust Containment

We use an industrial size exhaust fan at one end of our blasting booth (60 feet long 15ft high 18ft wide) and then we just crack open the garage door at the opisite end for air intake, seems to work great for our needs. A mobile blast booth would be sweet and it can be done. I have seen pictures of a mobile set up with a steel storage unit outfitted with axels and a drop down ramp. Im not sure if you would have enough room with the the width of the storage unit get a vehicle blasted but just about anything else will fit.

Re: Dust Containment

Blastpro, I've seen operators using refitted transoceanic containers just like you're describing. Right now, I need something I can carry in a 6x10 trailer, so that's not quite the answer. However, that would even make a pretty decent stationary blast room, and I think containers are available pretty cheap. I've seen ads by used container dealers that actually retrofit the units into multi-story industrial buildings and such. Pretty cool, actually.

I guess if I played my cards right, I could just get an old container and trailer frame, and have a mobile facility wherever I needed it. Kind of like a constructin site office trailer.

One thing about being low-dollar: it stimulates creativity. Of course, I'd rather be wealthy than creative...
