Do You Guys Blast Wet Or Dry? Metal

Do you guys blast wet or dry? I couldnt imagine blasting dry in open air in my city. I'll be looking for trouble.

Suppose i had a dump truck to blast and dust is a major concern. Could i use water? Would the surface right away? Or Could I blast wet, when finished dry the entire blasted surface by blowing air onto it, and have it coated right away?

I've only wet blasted (boat bottom paint). It's toxic and has to be controlled.

All of my dry blasting has been portable and gone to guys that specialize.

Re: Do You Guys Blast Wet Or Dry? Metal

there are several ways to wet blast but everyway u do it the water must be reclaimed and disposed of properly.yes it will flash rust but you can paint over it after u get it dried off with devoe bar rust epoxy primer and top coat it,there are other coatings u can use but this is what we used.
ultra high pressure water blast @ 22k psi will strip it down to bare metal no abrasives used just water ,containment and a suck truck.

I would have liked to use water on two applications, one was a brick wall inside, the other was that dump truck. During both jobs i could not see, black out due to the dust. The only fall back to water is what you get when you mix the two....Sludge. I have the water ring hose I got on E-Bay and will be getting the ring this summer.

Re: Do You Guys Blast Wet Or Dry? Metal

if i do blast wet, and it starts to flash rust, is there anything that can be used to neutralize the rust? can we dryout the metal and let say coat it with something like wd40? or Maybe brush down the entire surface with something that removes flash rusting?

Maybe something like this?

http://www.flashrust.com/index.htm

Or What is that other product that is used to wipe down metals when painting?

Re: Do You Guys Blast Wet Or Dry? Metal

If the item is going to be painted, I would not use WD40 on it unless the customer requested it. You may have to prime as you go. I am kicking around the idea of offering priming to customers. I also tell them that if there items are not picked up the day of blasting and primed, rust will start and it will be at there expense to have it removed.. Like I said, I am new and still learning. I am for sure going to start offering priming now that I have a building to blast in. I just got to keep it safe for the enviormnent.

There are several types of "holding coats" that can be applied to freshly blasted steel. I do not know the name of them. I have seen them in the real world though. I have seen guys that blast with U.H.P . The white metal blast they produce will last for ten hours or more in a salty area.

plazaman,
I like you your a good guy. You have to understand conversion coatings if your an engineer. If you are a blaster you need to understand how well an epoxy will stick to a profile

plazaman,
I have been unfortunate enough to have to study both ends of corrosion

Re: Do You Guys Blast Wet Or Dry? Metal

the problem that i am facing now is the dust from blasting since i am located in the city. i cannot have clouds of dust airborne, so when blasting metal, i need to deal with the dust without constructing costly containment

My dad restores old cars as a hobby. he dont have a blaster just does it with liqiud strippers and wire bruses but he uses stuff called phospho. It stops the rust cold and turns it black and can be painted right over. It can be bought at most auto parts stores around $20 gal. It used to be called ospho when we got it from a guy at a ship yard. Maybe that is the comercial name, dont know.

dlcj is this sprayable or brush on... I am looking to add something to my blasting to make is sound more desirable..No body likes to get something blasted and have to go to work on it right away. It would be nice to tell the customer that it will be ok to let sit for a few weeks.

Re: Do You Guys Blast Wet Or Dry? Metal

We got it in a gallon jug and looks like winshield washer fluid. We usually use a spray bottle like a windex bottle or something and a disposable brush to even it out. It should work good to use a hand held pump up sprayer for larger jobs. I dont think i would try an paint sprayer cuz it will vaporize to much and the fumes are pretty strong. You'll need fresh air and or good ventalization.

Re: Do You Guys Blast Wet Or Dry? Metal

one more thing. dad uses the phospho when he let clean metal set to long and surface rust started forming so he dont have to brush it again. Will help prevent rust for a few days but metal will start to rust again if left in the rain to long. Its more of a killer converter than a preventer. Just my experience
