Crushed Glass Coverage

I am looking for some feedback on the consumption rates of crushed glass, 40/70 medium grit. I am looking to blast 5000 sf of 5086 aluminum to create a 1-2 mil profile for coating. If my math is correct, I am looking at a consumption rate of 5-6lbs per square foot or 30,000 #'s. Does $0.14 # seem like a decent price for this type of quantity?
I was planning on running a #5 nozzel @ 90 psi
Thanks,

Mark

Re: Crushed Glass Coverage

The price seems right, but 30,000 pounds of media seems high to me. I would think about 15,000 pounds. A test blast would tell you alot

Re: Crushed Glass Coverage

First off I would say that if the surface is bare aluminim, then that figure is way high for consumption rates. If you have a coating on the surface to remove and depending on how thick the coating is and the type of coating it is then you are closer to being right. Another thing is, if the surface area is flat then a #5 nozzle your going to be making some mighty small swipes. If it is bare aluminum step up to a #6 or #7 and widen the pattern out some a bit. Also depends on what size CFM compressor you have also. But you do not want too much pressure on the aluminum. You can warp it if your not careful. I would also think that a medium grit would give you a deeper profile of 1-2 mils as well. I would think that a fine grit would give you at least a 1-1.5 mil profile at least. Anyone else got anything to add?

Sounds to me like someone knew what they were doing when they ruled this guy out. I am glad to know, on the other hand, that your guys can drive big trucks and that you have the whole DOT thing under control.

Re: Crushed Glass Coverage

thanks for replies, very helpful. I thought 30,000 seems high. I agree a test will tell all. This thing is is pretty big. 100' long, 24'wide, 10'tall. 3/8" on the hull and 1/4" on the side walls, so I don't think I will warp it. Benny, Using a 185 cfm, so I guess I could bump up to a #6. I think I am going to star with the fine and see what kinda of profile I get, provided I get the job. Thanks again

Re: Crushed Glass Coverage

Mark,

With a 185 CFM and a #6, you will be loosing a lot of pressure at the nozzle, but like I said if it's bare aluminum it should still give you a good profile. If it is too much loss, then go back to the #5 or either rent a 375 and put a #7 in there and run with it. And I have no clue what Panderson is talking about. You ok there Buddy??????????
