Century Old Wooden Doors

I have an opportunity to prep some pocket doors that came out of an 1850's farm house. Wondering what would be a better media, glass beads or walnut shells. I'll have a couple other doors to practice on before I do the pocket doors.

They have a dark stain on them now, and he would like to put either a lighter colour stain, or paint them depending on how they turn out.

i have not yet blasted using walnut but i would think that the more softer medias like soda or potasium sulphate or super k would be more my choice to start and do test patches with...you want something that does not erode the wood at all but yet cleans it...

I agree with Blastserve, consider cob material, but the soda etc. whould probably be the ticket

good luck

Re: Century Old Wooden Doors

I didn't even think of cob. I think I'll do one side of the practice door with soda and the other side with cob. I'll post some pictures when finished, hopefully in the next couple weeks.

Thanks guys

I would recommend cob as well, its less agressive and tear the softer parts of the wood unlike other medias.

Re: Century Old Wooden Doors

You could blast them with soda, it will freshen up the surface and should expose the natural color. You have to be careful because any type of blasting on wood will raise the grain. Best bet would be, to try a test spot and the more the better. You need to have the equipment dialed in before you do any real work on the actual doors.
Here is a vid of a mantel that was solid mahogany and well over a 100 years old. Blasted it with soda @ 130psi at approx 3' distance.

Gale,
After you soda blast wood, is there any special prep that needs to be done to remove the soda before you refinish the wood?

Re: Century Old Wooden Doors

after I blasted it, the entire surface was then sanded lightly -believe it was cleaned with sunbright prior to any sealer. Have not seen the finished product yet, will be at least another month before the addition is done.
