Re: Blasting The Hull Of A Boat

I've never heard of dry ice blasting a boat. soda blasting on the other hand is common practice on boats. from what i've heard, it works very well. here are some links for info on it...

Re: Blasting The Hull Of A Boat

I saw a demo of the Church and Dwight Soda blasting system on the hull of a boat. It was a very impressive demo, I do not remember productions rates, but it moved along relatively quickly. The best part of the demo was that there was no signs of any damage to the gelcoat, it was smooth and clean.

Re: Blasting The Hull Of A Boat

i have not actually soda blasted a hull yet but i just used starblast on an entire flats boat hull.it had been painted and the owner wanted it back to the original gel.worked very well and quick took about 3 1/2 hours to do the 20 foot hull.
i did read the links and had already been quoting boats for callers and got a job for a 24 foot boat that i quoted 500-600 on .we will see how i feel at the end of the job if i actually made any money.

Re: Blasting The Hull Of A Boat

i stripped the bottom paint off of a hull of a 24ft center console fishing boat today...the customer wanted to remove all the paint and PRIMER to have the boat look better for trailering purposes and not being left in the water...

i sed 8 bags of soda about 10 gallons of fuel and will charge the higher tier of my quote...600.00.it took around 6 hours including lifting the boat with my forklift to get under the bunks of the trailer.

i guess the link that shows a price of 20dollars per foot is probably if your are stripping the boat but are repainting and not concerned if the primer is left on the hull.i had to make it look like there was never a paint job and it was a little longer than i figured by about double on the time and 2 bags more on the soda.

it was my first time using soda and i can only see the use of it on a hull of a boat only...it does in fact rough the surface of the gel and it will eat the gel back to glass mat if you are not continually moving the nozzle.the stuff was everywhere like a regular blast mess but it was a little more fine of a mess to clean up.i also used duct tape for the fine line at the water line and it worked well.
all in all i think the job was a short bid by around 200-300 and will use this experience as a learning curve.the job should have been around 900 in my opinion based off of my knowledge.

i did buy a whole skid of soda...48 bags.it was 24.50 a bag that way.anyone buying it cheaper?i have plenty left for future jobs but just for the future i would like to know if it is bought for better money elswhere.

hope this helps anyone for future reference.

I just bought a skid of Armex XL formula soda from Abbrasive Products in Indiana. I came to about $17 a bag before shipping, which shipping was $200. So it made it about $21 and some change per bag. Which I am in Ohio you are Florida but might wanna give them a call next time.

Crank, if you're ever in the Hagerstown area or northern WV doing a log cabin, let me know. I would love to see that process. Maybe I could even lend a hand. I blasted a deck a while back and when you look really close, the crushed glass pitted the wood slightly. Don't you log cabin blasters use corn cob?

I have soda blasted several 31-34 ft fiberglass boat bottoms on my own in one day. With an experienced helper you should be able to soda blast a 80 ft in 2 days I would think? I'm curious to know why someone is calling you for blast work when you say you know nothing about this? Possibly have them call me toll free any where in the US @ 866.659.2121
