Re: Blasting Cars
How fast do you consume walnut? Is it about the same as glass or slag? I guess the question how long will it take to empty a 600lb pot with a #5 nozzle and 185cfm? Do you run it at the same PSI you would glass or slag? I have never blasted walnut but want to try.

Re: Blasting Cars
Kill i use walnut a lot. I can only fit one 50 lb bag at a time in my surface tek pot because it is fluffy compared to soda or glass. I get about thirty minutes or better. I stick around 90 psi on boats and on autos. But it will work well at lower too if you need to be more gentle.

Re: Blasting Cars
I'm not going to convert my small pot to soda. I went ahead and replumbed it today with my micro valve at 3/4" piping. I'm going to head up to IDS in a week or so to get a bag of walnut to try. Does it work as well as soda and what is the price difference between the two?

Re: Blasting Cars
I just started playing with walnut shell.
smells like a wood working shop after blasting... I love it! Leaves the same finish as soda, I think it takes bondo out a little faster though. I've only try'd the course walut. next time I'm going to use glen's mix its a finner grade walnut. got to get more work in so I can try more... When the boats start I want to try one with the walnut. every one bitches about the dust with soda.. the price from surface tek, walnut was 10 less then the nitraim soda.

I did this to my little pot a few years back, and I loved it. just hated stopping to fill it all the time. but it ran great with that 3/4" and mix valve. Good for little jobs!!

Re: Blasting Cars
a while back i bought a 50lb bag of walnut and tried it in my blast cabinet. it was horrible and didnt work so i gave up on walnuts. these were very coarse/large ones. last weekend i was buying glass and happened to see a broken bag of walnuts. way smaller, it was 18-40grit.
what grit do you guys blast with? I have a 69 Cuda to do next weekend and the bodyman would like me to use walnut instead of soda. |

Re: Blasting Cars
I'm not certain what the size is of my walnut but its like my 40 /70 glass. Pretty small. It will work just fine for you with a regular set up. Those blast cabinets just don't have the umph of your pot system.
I just did a super bee for a guy. He had it at another shop first and told me it was going to be nearly impossible for me to strip his doors. The other guy only was able to do a dollar bill size spot in a minute he told me. Then I found out it was in a large blast cabinet. I think it took me about four minutes to strip the whole door with walnut. I showed him a vidio I made while I was shooting it. I could put it on line if you like. He was stunned. I have a pic of the little spot the other guy had done as well.

Re: Blasting Cars
Will that walnut heat up and warp the metal if your not careful?? What angle do you blast it at?

Re: Blasting Cars
You can't heat it up to any significant degree with the walnut Chris. And it also isn't cutting the surface which, I imagine, is the actual cause of warping. I guess I mostly hold at about a 45% angle but whatever works for you. I blast around 90 psi. You can't go wrong just play around.
Rather, I'm afraid the super bee is in pieces so that vidio was just a close up of a spot on a door while I was blasting for the customer to see how quickly it was cleaning. I would show it to you if you want to see an example of walnut on auto paint but you wouldn't know what car it was from. If you go to my website under mobile work I use walnut in a vidio for a wooden deck. Betterblast.com

Re: Blasting Cars
Well my distributor was out of walnut so I ordered 4 50lb bags of 14/20 cob to try on fenders. Has anyone used Cob on cars before?

Re: Blasting Cars
Glen,
I saw you did a 60' Porsche on your site. I have one coming up 68' (I hope soon) the guy wanted soda; it’s in a profile area. He talked to the Nabors, and they will not mind the soda dust, but thought walnut might be better for the dust. Question is: Do you think that the walnut would strip the paint at the same rate as Glass? (Not worried about rust spots) Trying to figure out how much walnut to bring. Job: outside of body & inside of engine and trunk compartment. + Hood, trunk lid and fenders both sides. I had figured 8 bags of soda? But that’s with my soda pot. Glass with regular Marco pot? 12-15? I want to make a good impression, as this guy is the head of the Porsche club up here...

Re: Blasting Cars
It does about the same as glass, yes. Definatly less dust than soda. It's less dense than the glass. one bag fills up my whole pot. I think I get more time out of it than glass. If you don't have to get out any filler it will go quickly. Might be undercoating on inside of fenders. I would just bring all you can hold to be safe.

Re: Blasting Cars
What about cob? anyone used it? I just spent $67.00 for 200lbs. The guy that works at IDS has to go to Ohio in the morning so he is bringing it with him. No shipping....He said that it did about the same job as walnut. He did add that walnut finishes did leave the surface a bit oily. I plan on having someone video the process with the cob if I can find someone. I just want someone who has actually shot it to give me some pointers.

Re: Blasting Cars
Walnut shell is not oily. You can run your hand through the bag and you will be dry. I have never noticed even the slightest hint of a shiny or oily film of any kind from it. I know of no products made with this alleged oil . Nuts have oil not shells. I saw on the Gemblasting website where they tried to claim this about walnut also. "open a jar of peanut butter and what do you see? That's oil, on top"
Yes, they compared walnut shells to peanut butter. If you sell cob or whatever Gemblasting is you need to down the compitition. I have heard cob works quite well nothing wrong with it. Surface Tek stocks it right now because it is cheaper than walnut at this time but they can order walnut too if you wanted it. As far as pointers I would say point it at the paint and depress the triger.
