Nicotine Coating
Hi Guys,
I am sitting here on my laptop with a SPLITTING headache. Actually, I'm not sitting on it... just in front of it. The headache comes from a day of painting with Original Kilz. Our company is growing at a rapid pace and we moved into a larger facility a couple of months ago. We have done major renovations on the building and our laboratory is STILL not built. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands today. We had about 900 ft2 of paneling that needed to be coated. I have coated paneling at home in the past and found that the waterborne Kilz has TERRIBLE adhesion to paneling and that Original Kilz is much better. What do you guys use for this? Are there products that have great adhesion AND stain blocking that don't STINK! Is there anything that is Zero VOC? Cover Nicotine Stains? What do you guys think? |

Re: Nicotine Coating
Kills odorless works well and is oil based but it has a high solid content so it leaves a very textured surface behind. If you get a shellac based primer it works well with a terrible smell but the smell is gone in five minutes.

Re: Nicotine Coating
As far as smell goes. I do alot of highrise Hotels and Office buildings. And I use alot of oil base Kilz. This might sound crazy but it works really good for the smell. I add approximately 1 cup ( I don't really measure it.) of vanilla extract to 5 gallons of Kilz. I buy it by the gallon or the Chef @ the highrise's resturant usually is alway's glad to donate to the cause.

Re: Nicotine Coating
Nicotine Coating is one of the hardest thing to cover because it keeps reweting it self. Over the years Have tried almost every way to kill it that you can think of Kizz Bin with a top coat of Latex paint. One of the last ones we did a coat of oil primer and then a oil top coat paint. Witch has given me the best in this type of case.

Re: Nicotine Coating
I love when I'm asked on the estimate "are you sure everything needs to be stainkilled?'
I always reply "it's either that or pick a nicotine colored paint to match the bleed through". P.S. wear a respirator. |

Re: Nicotine Coating
As a commercial and industrial painting contractor, we've used many types of primers, both water and solvent based. There are some water based stain killing bonding primers out there. Superbond is by MA Bruder I think. It's good, however, we've always had better luck with the solvent based stainblockers. It's a good idea to wear a respirator when applying that type of coating though. No paint job is worth risking your health. It's a small price to pay to keep you from getting sick.

Re: Nicotine Coating
We do a variety of paints which which cover nicotine and many other stains with a single coat. They work. Not allowed to post URLS but a Google search for anti-nicotine paints should show us close to the top - Paints and Coatings.

Re: Nicotine Coating
The zinsser BIN shellac-base primer will seal the nicotine stains, but it smells really strong. It does, however, dry very quickly so you will be able to go back into the room sooner. Sherwin-Williams has an acrylic primer/sealer called preprite ProBlock. It doesn't smell bad, but I don't know how well it can seal out nicotine stains. It is similar to Zinnsser Bulleye 123

Re: Nicotine Coating
You had the right idea to cover the nicotine stain with a solvent based primer. You should look at some of the solvent based ODORLESS options which outperform latex primers. You get all the solvent based performance (adhesion AND blocking) without the smell. Here are some names Zinsser Odorless (Bullseye High Hide), Pittsburg Paints Seal Grip stain killing primer, Insl-x Odorless, Sherwin Williams PrepRite ProBlock, Coroando Cover It Universal Stain Sealer. After you prime with solvent based odorless you can topcoat with a latex paint.
Odorless primers are made with different solvents than tradional primers like Kilz Origional, Odorless require less airturn over and should reduce the ill side effects like headaches. |

Re: Nicotine Coating
I agree with the solvent based sealers over nicotine, but for some reason Kilz has the greatest buzz factor. The advice for a respirator charcoal is the best. We did some apts. years ago and went down a steep hill for lunch and lung break. When we got there we looked at each other and said..how'd we do that. This was in new cons't. with no windows in the summer. After that it was mask city. gl. pd
