Need advice on fixing a stained door....

I recently installed a redwood reserve collection garage door....The homeowner wasnt home so I installed the spade handles that come with the door... He gets home and says him and his wife had told the guy at the big orange store that they didnt want the handles on the door... Now I have to make this right by him and was wondering if their is some kinda wood filler that could be staind to blend in with the rest of the door.......The holes are gonna be pretty small when I pull the handles off... about a 1/2" .....Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I dont wanna pay $1400.00 to replace a section ...Thanks

Drill the holes to a standard size (1/2") and buy a plug cutter, about $15-20 and some matching wood. Cut about 20-30 plugs and grain match. Mix dust from the plugger into the glue used to secure the plugs. On a varnished door it will never be invisible but the average person will walk right by it.

Makes me wonder how it would work if you could find dowel rod of matching wood. Say 1" dowel placed in angle iron and drilled through the side with 1/2" plug cutter to get matching grain then glued in with colored glue. Sand flush or cut a flat side before drilling. I guess, as far as that goes, just find a matching 1 or 2X. Just letting my mind wonder. I may be going around the world to say the same thing. I tend to make things a little complicated sometimes.

What is the finish going to be? We have come in on jobs that had to plug natural wood doors/beams- sanded smooth and applied the finish. Sometimes the patch shows.

I whip out my palette and blend in with a quick grain/color match. WHen done, no one knows it's there.

I suggest hiring a local faux painter with good portfolio- cheaper than replacement. We do it in an hour or less.

One job recently, a contractor installed 150 year old beams on ceiling of a remodeled kitchen. They drilled 1" holes to use lag screws to hold them in place. Filling holes with plugs didn't even come close, so they called me.

4 hours or so later, it became a game by others to try and "find" the holes. Most couldn't be located...

A good faux artisan could help you out..

Proside,

Here are a few pics of what can be done- I'm sure you could find a local artisan to do the same thing...
