We always did four passes with Zolotone... you have to spray the first coat with high pressure and decrease each additonal coat to get the smooth coat with the flakes intact you are looking for. Never heard of using it on countertops though. At 500 per 5 it's too expensive to me.. unless the price went down considerably.

Re: Multi Color Coating

I get this stuff for 88 bucks for 2 gal. but it is not zolatone brand.
bathtub refinishing is one of many types of coatings i apply and the company that i buy my coatings from offers a zolatone type coating and it is used mostly for counter tops.many bathtub refinishers are useing it and apply a clear coat over it.i just cant get that smooth as glass feel yet.

Re: Multi Color Coating

Are you making multiple passes or just one? Even a knockoff Zolo is still made the same. Pressure in your gun needs to change to bring out the flakes without spitting it all over the walls, making it rough.

Re: Multi Color Coating

I use Stone Flecks on countertops. HVLP, #4 fluid set with #3 air cap on graco gun. 2 - 3 passes at 90 degree angles for coverage. Then I let it dry 24-48 hours and come back and ligkt sand with 400 grit. Then clear coat with Stone Gard. 2 90 degree passes, 30 minute flash, then 2 more 90 degree passes. It still has some texture, but that's how my customers like it. If you want it like glass, you have to find a way to spray the finish with a very small profile, then sand it, then use some kind of a thick glossy clear coat.

Where is the best place to go to get training for refinishing bathtubs and countertops? I live in Texas. Also! Which product feels the most like Corian or Granite?

Re: Multi Color Coating

it depends on your skill level as a painter.if you have none (skill as a painter)then you would absolultly need schooling,i think you should find one that helps with the business end to be good and i think they all do now.you dont need a franchise so dont buy it.i think integrity coatings does schooling in texas. and there are many others like hawk ,midwest and tub king.but if you have skills with two component type coatings you can get by with videos and manuals or you can do like i did go to work at your local tub refinishing co and get paid to learn. only takes a couple tubs to get the hang of it if you have skills.if you want the smooth corian or granite feel that will take some buffing but it can be done as i have taught myself with a few tips from others.i think any zolatone/clone type coating can work one trick is to thin it out let dry 1-2 hours apply uncut fast drying clear coat 2-3 coats let dry over night and if it is not smooth wet sand high spots with 1k sandpaper and buff it with Meguiars solo one liqiud system.almost feels as smooth as polished stone.and yes it is so easy a caveman can do it.

Oh, and I prime it with two coats of aerospace primer. If I could get some pics to post I'd do it but I am having trouble getting them to upload
