Garage floor

I have a 3 year old garage slab that was painted with 1 part epoxy when it was new. Now i want to put something better looking and more permanent down.Maybe one of these 2 part epoxy kits? It is about 750 sqft , i guess my main question is what do i have to do to prep the floor before i put the new coating on it, do i have to sand/grind the current one off or is there a chemical i can use to etch it then just coat over it? any help would be appreciated.

Diamond grinding or shot blasting would be your only option. After all that work I would invest in a quality floor. Look for 100% solids epoxy. Just because it is "2 parts" doesn't mean its any good. The vast majority of DIY kits are junk. Do a bunch of research before you choose.

Yeah a job that size could be done yourself if you pay attention to the details, it all depends on what your looking for.

Prep is at least 75% of any epoxy job. You can put the best materials over a crap prep job and have it fail. You can put so-so materials on an excellently prepped floor and find the results to be satisfactory to what the floor is going to be used for.

By the time you add up the tools & materials you may find its just as easy to have someone come in at $4/sq ft (roughly) and do it with a warranty. Figure on at least rental of a diamond grinder, materials, spiked shoes (for walking on the floor while backrolling or tossing chips), 18" roller frame & lint free rollers, notched floor squeegee, denatured alcohol, & all the other consumables like buckets and what not.

If your going to have someone else apply it, you may want to look into a Polyaspartic system. Polyaspartic is generally 3 times more abrasion resistant than epoxy and has a rapid cure time. You can park on your garage floor the next day where as an epoxy floor takes up to 7 days to fully cure. A full vinyl chip broadcast polyaspartic floor looks very nice!

PM or e-mail Eric @ Wolverine Coatings...goes by Wolverine-Eric on this site
http://www.contractortalk.com/member...poster&t=26877
His company website:
http://www.wolverinecoatings.com/

I've worked with his stuff before and it is really amazing
They do recommend some prep for garages, but the stuff seems to stick to anything...if Eric says it'll stick to your project, it will
He's a man of his word and the products seem to out perform any claims made
(refreshing these days)

I don't know if he can sell you direct for a DIY project, but maybe he can tell you where to get it...or something good available in your area
He does know his stuff so he's always interesting to talk/e-mail to

this guy eric blew me off, we started to talk, on the phone, had a nice conversation, he offered to let me try out a new waterbase product on my shop floor, when i followed up with him he did not return calls, i would avoid him..ps i was paying for the product, and was going to let him know how it performed.
