FastClad DTM Urethane vs BarRust & Devthane

i am bidding a job that involves rusting metal. i specified a SSPC-SP2-Hand Tool Cleaning and i want to either paint with ICI BarRust 235 primer and Devthane Urethane topcoat or a single application of SW FastClad DTM Urethane.

i know the ICI system will last longer but will take more in labor.

Has anyone used FastClad DTM Urethane? how well does it cover (Black over Black & White over White).

SSPC-SP2-Hand Tool Cleaning
Hand Tool Cleaning removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, and other detrimental foreign matter. It is not intended that
adherent mill scale, rust, and paint be removed by this process. Mill scale, rust, and paint are considered adherent if
they cannot be removed by lifting with a dull putty knife. Before hand tool cleaning, remove visible oil, grease, soluble
welding residues, and salts by the methods outlined in SSPC-SP1. For complete instructions, refer to Steel Structures
Paint Council Surface Preparation Specification No.3.

fastclad dtm
Minimum recommended surface preparation:
Iron & Steel: SSPC-SP6/NACE 3, 2 mil profile. fastclad tends to fall off if there is no profile. how long is your warranty for this project?

Yea, i know it calls for blasting but that is not in the budget. My SW rep assures me that it should be ok....

is there another product that can go over rust in a single application?

I just completed a job where there was alot of rust. My local SW rep told me nothing stops rust, only slows it down. He was right. We went to bare metal, used Zinc-Clad from SW, rust inhibitors like Naval Jelly, and wouldn't you know it, the rust came back within one year. Fk! So when you do this job, you might want to make sure your SW rep is going to back you up in case something goes wrong.

I already told my customer that rust will come back. that is why we are painting the steel black. if it is black it will be harder to see. we just got the job yesterday and it consists of painting steel light poles (total of 27) that are holding up the school zone flashing 20 mph signs. I think i am going with the Fastclad DTM. the job is an hour and a half drive so i gotta save money to pay for the fuel.

for your guys reference i charged $250 per pole plus the cost of a tow behind lift (+ $200 for fuel for lift) at a 25% markup.

I just need it to hold up until their check clears......

I'm not positive about this and if you are interested, I can get more info for you, but what about using a rust re-former and then a good DTM alkyd over the top of that?

If you are interested in that idea and want more info, you can pm me.

If the sherwin-williams rep that said you don't have to blast is willing to get his district manager to write you a warranty, use the FastClad. If anything goes wrong, they have to fix it.

Kem Kromik is ok for rust but its not the best. you really have to prep good to ensure the coating will last.

I can't blast....its not in the budget. a good sspc sp3 - power tool cleaning will prepare the substrate enough to get a couple years out of the coating.

I got the job but its not going until next spring (i am in Cleveland and the weather is starting to turn). i will add a material increase to the price in the spring.

i think i am going to go with the Bar Rust and Devthane. it has always performed well in the past. The Fastclad will have to wait until I sell another rusty steel job. Plus SW pricing has been getting out of controll.
