Durable Finish
I built an oak desk for a bank and need a top coat that would resist scratches etc..
It will be applied over a stain to match other desk in the bank Shermin Williams recommended using Helmans spar urethane. My painter recommended using a laquer. any other suggestions for a durable, gloss finish? |

Re: Durable Finish
I have used P&L Fabulon Bar Top Finish, still looking great 9 years later. We lost our local P&L dealers, so I don't know if this product is still available. It smells to high heaven.

Re: Durable Finish
Sorry Mike 2K = 2 part polyurethane. It is a high solids, industrial coating that is extremely tough.

Awlgrip is a polyester so no.
Imron seams to be similar to what I am referring to. This is more to what I was talking about

Re: Durable FinishQuote:
but my problem is I cant find anything local except the spar urethane and laquer and I dont have the time to wait if ordered. I can get a bar top coating from SW but dont want to spend that much for this one project. Which would be more durable the urethane or laquer? |

Re: Durable Finish
Urethane. If I were you I would just go get some Zar polyurethane. It is a tough coating, it just takes overnight to dry. Put 3 coats on and you will have a durable finish. Not sure if I'd use gloss, but could see using semi-gloss. Polyurethane is tough stuff, it is just not suited for industry because of the slow dry time. Best would be something designed for a floor, it is mar resistant.

Re: Durable Finish
thanks I'll see if I can find some of the Zars tommorrow.
dont know why but my painter thinks the laquer will be stronger than urethane... but I've been questioning his expertise in the finishing depatment lately. Seems like he's talking out his ass alot. |
