Every answer begins and ends with "Al Gore".

Good luck taking it I have the leed ci book was going to take it at one point of time but lost interest.

I sat in on a seminar and I laughed my way out of it. The guy didn't like me to much because I don't believe in global warming and told him his speculation and Mr. Gore was driving people crazy.

Is this Leeds a useful thing to have with the growing amount of green construction? I have an aunt who's a civil engineer who got one. And people have told me to get it, and that it would make myself more marketable.

Given your location, I think it would be helpful, if for no other reason than marketing purposes. As I understand it, "green" is big right now on the west coast and increasingly so elsewhere. I talked about the green movement with my cousin who lives in Seattle this Christmas. She didn't know much about the construction industry; she did say that the average consumer (Seattle) considers themselves more environmentally conscious than we do here in the midwest.

There are government contracts in our area where having LEED certified personnel is (almost) required on the project. There are definitely large companies that require new projects and alterations to be LEED certified.I think that with the growth of the sustainable design movement, "green construction" will only continue to grow. Environmental advocates certainly made substantial contributions to the recent political campaigns and I expect them to be repaid handsomely. Will it trickle down to building codes everywhere? I wouldn't be surprised at anything that happens.

I really am a believer that the movement will be strong for the next five to ten years. Whether it has any measurable effect on our environment, who knows? I am becoming invested in it right now for economic reasons.

By the way, if you are going to do it, now is the time. The process gets substantially more difficult after March 31 of this year. If we don't have our certifications by then, I imagine it would be a while before we would get them.

See USGBC dot org for more information.

Thanks Solar. I can see where your cousin is coming from if she lives in the city limits of Seattle. We are the third gayest city in the country, I don't want to make judgements, but you know what I mean. Seattle people are basically, hippyish, metro, nature loving, type. So they do consider themselves more environmentally conscious. I keep hearing about green construction getting bigger and bigger, especially in the north west. But the thing is, I don't know anybody who's actually doing green construction. I know it couldn't hurt to get certified, just not sure if it would really help any.

Only you can guess as to whether or not it is worth it. There is a real opportunity cost to everything we do to build our businesses. Not just in money, but in the time invested.

Like I said earlier, I see the emphasis on the environment as a trend sloping upward for a while. I've been wrong before -- lots of times. When it comes to marketing to your customers, remember that your customers' perceptions are their reality. You can try to change some of their perceptions, but for those invested in the eco movement, I think it is better to try to cater to their desires.

You don't need the certification to prove to the customer you're not intent on polluting their community or ruining planet earth. Check out Chris Campbell's website. As far as I know, his company is not LEED certified, but their customers definitely know they have the opportunity to minimize their carbon impact.

site here: greenwerkspro dot com

If for no other reason than money, use the green movement as a way to increase your profit margins. From a recent Wall Street Journal article about carpet cleaning businesses,

"A couple of the companies promoted "green" or "organic" cleaning solutions and had logos on their Web sites from third-party organizations that certify products based on whether they meet stringent environmental and human health standards. That was a big selling point for those of us with children or pets." (emphasis mine)

The entire article is here: tinyurl dot com/wsjgreencc

Good luck.
