Green? Probably not. Decent product? Also probably not. Recyclable? I don't know.
Kinda like the Toyota Prius. Parts from all over the World shipped to Japan for assembly then the finished product is sent to America (California mostly).

Green really needs to be re-thought. What is 'green' really? New topic.

Re: Is MDF Green

mdf green, if you ask me hell no. i have a feeling its going to be the next asbestos. a former co-worker is from holland, and his father was the owner/operator of a lumber mill which also produced mdf products. 6 years ago it was banned in the country because of all dust and glues that went into it

with my experience with paint grade trim, poplar is the best thing to go with, its more durable than mdf but still has the machining capability of it. On more high end jobs its been spec'd by the builder who care more about quality than speed and low cost of building

Re: Is MDF Green

Lots of flippant answers above but the fact is homebuyers are increasingly aware of the dangers of outgassing wood products. If you can demonstrate some flexibility in materials and knowledge on the subject of healthy homes, you might be able to attract some higher end contracts for people who want to limit their exposure to dangerous chemicals and can afford to pay for it. There are safer kinds of glue that can be used you just have to look for them. Also if you live in a tree growing area visit your local small sawmill. They often have real boards that are comparable in cost to 5/8 0r 3/4 plywood and you'll leave a much smaller carbon footprint behind. SawyerEd

Re: Is MDF Green

is that true with the Formaldehyde? that must be the reason i get so deathly ill when i work with it! we have tried so many ways to keep the dust down, but it just lingers in the air for a long time and we all get bad upper repertory infections when doing a big job! i have heard of the next big thing to be comparable to mdf and green to be "wheat board" although they do not sell it around here it's getting used in cali and canada.

I just tried a new type of sheet good today, first I have seen of it. It was called "performance core oak" It basically looked like OSB with an oak veneer. I didnt look into it too much but apparantly it is 4 layers of timberstrand compressed at extremly high pressure...it was perfectly flat and has excellant screw retention

Exactly where I was going. it is the next asbestos. right up there with hardie plank.
As to mdf being green, hell no. it is crap, has no longevity, crapifies our entire built environment by taking that which should be built for the generations to being built for the decade at best.
As for 'green' what a load. green is the preservation of existing buildings. My 1974 land rover is greener than any toyota pious. Two sets of tires in 34 years, all parts rebuildable with a leatherman and a dab of peanut butter... green.....meh. F*** green.

Re: Is MDF Green

If you want "green" buildings, look to Europe. They build to last hundreds of years. We build to last long enough for the 30 yr mortgage. That is provided you remodel it a few times along the way.
