Choosing Green Materials.

1. Choose building materials that suit the site and climate and which support passive design principles.

2. Maximise the efficiency of your resources through efficient design, select materials that require less processing, order accurately and recycle offcuts.

3. Select durable materials that have a long life and require limited additional maintenance.

Green- a secondary color arrived at by mixing the primary colors yellow and blue. There you have it.

reusing products for other means rather than throwing them in the landfill, when there are people out there that could benefit from their use. Also planning ahead so as to keep down the amount of generated waste at a construction site ( or home ).

By that definition, i have always been green. Even before green was cool. Mostly cuz i grew up poor and had to use and reuse every thing possible. Not poor now (far from rich) but still a big pack rat. I save everything just in case i need it for something later even if not for its original use.

Time to throw it out, it's obviously gone bad.

Seriously, My problem with "green" as the fad it is now and where it's headed is that a basic, good idea is picked up by politicians at all levels from the small town selectman to the White House jump on the bandwagon chasing votes and thousands of new laws and ordinances are kneejerked into being without real thought behind them. Five to ten years down the road they bite us in the a$$.

Re: Green: Your Definition

Communism is a socioeconomic structure that promotes the establishment of a classless, stateless society based on common ownership of the means of production and property in general.[1][2][3] It is usually considered to be a branch of socialism, a broad group of social and political ideologies, which draws on the various political and intellectual movements with origins in the work of theorists of the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution[4], although socialist historians say they are older.[who?][citation needed] Communism attempts to offer an alternative to the problems believed to be inherent with capitalist economies and the legacy of imperialism and nationalism. Communism states that the only way to solve these problems would be for the working class, or proletariat, to replace the wealthy bourgeoisie, which is currently the ruling class, in order to establish a peaceful, free society, without classes, or government.[2] The dominant forms of communism, such as Leninism, Stalinism, Maoism and Trotskyism are based on Marxism, but non-Marxist versions of communism (such as Christian communism and anarchist communism) also exist and are growing in importance since the fall of the Soviet Union.

I read it 5 times but I still can't find the part about legislative agendas, maybe you should correct Wikipedia.

Just an indicator of YOUR Poly-Sci experience.

And besides....WIKI IS user compiled and therefore subject to ignorance, misinformation and simple errors. Most of the time they get it right.

Anyhow.......I have discussed this Agenda with you before and we ARE on OPPOSITE sides of the aisle. I do respect your stance whole-heartedly although I disagree completely. We all have the right, for now, to our own 1st Amendment opinions.

Re: Green: Your Definition

As a "green" builder we've seen a lot of green washing from building materials all the way to household goods. The most green house is the one that isn't built. Beyond that, everything we do has some sort of impact on the world around us. That being said, we either move into the woods eating grubs, or we do our best to minimize. So for me green means:

- a commitment to minimalism (what do i really need?)
- doing things that have a real value on the environment. If i use recycled lumber, sure it takes longer and costs more, but the environmental impact cannot be denied.
- maximizing resourcefulness (not taking 4 trips to Parr in one day)
- creating quality products that will stand the test of reasonable time
- committing to NOT using products that may be convenient, but are horrible (read vinyl). There is usually an alternative.

those are some initial thoughts.
