ok this is just a brain storm, just to see whats out there
i have always dreamed of having a big property with a river running through it 10 Acre is good
now to the point,
Water mill with a generator, with a windmill also, water filtration system with a small dam, geothermal heat pump, artificial beach
Good idea or not?
what will it cost? est

 that was fast Gene
I would love a place like that - maybe more like 40 acres, but 10 is doable
Before you buy, get the rivers flow rate checked - to low, you won't generate enough electricity, unless you put two or three in a row
Also you will have to verify that you can build a dam

The Dam will be basically a extra large swimming pool under the soil, my water filtration will be from large rocks all the way to sand then through floss, then into possible a RO system
As for generators from the windmill or water mill, i am not sure if this would work but a Heavy duty Alternator geared up so it can be ran at high RPM's then into capacitors then through a step up transformer
as for the artificial beach, Sand is basically free if you can find a pit, Pool Pumps and some stuff from here really cool http://www.americanwavemachines.com/index.html
as for the GEO i haven't looked into it yet. but to dig the hold ill do that part 4 ft deep haha
check out these guys http://visionenergy.ca/

That sounds like a great plan. You got some accurate estimates, but check the power potential of the river.

For a minute I was half expecting for you to add after the artificial beach, artificial beach bunnies or doing a commercial for Master Card. lol
But seeing you have serious thoughts here see if this may also help with your idea.
Some states help with cost for creating natural ponds, water ways, natural energy systems, ect. It is worth a try checking into this. A friend of mine that did do this back up in NH, the state helped with the cost & their civil Engineer even did the design needed for the permits and that in itself is a cost saver.
With a river though, you may have more time with the wetlands board in obtaining a permit than anyone else, but you never know until you try.
For my land back up in NH as I did live on 12.15 acres with a small stream running about as dead center of my land as one could hope for.
After finding out the help he got with the cost of adding a pond on his land, I tried. But because I wanted to do as you described, dam and increase the width of the stream to have a useable section as well as create steps in the stream by a series of dams to possibly get some energy from the water, I had to go thru the wetlands board and it was going to be a year before my plan was even heard, not to mention changes and additions I may need and was told it would be doubtful to pass I never pursued it.
But is always worth looking into as dreams become reality when one persues them.
Good luck on a great idea, let us know how you make out.

Nearly all States will Stock you Lake if it meets certain Qualifications! I was involved in one in Tucker, GA.
It was a small Spring that ran through this Customers yard. He spent 20k+ on a Dam and coupla G's on depth excavation. 6 Months later it was 16 feet deep at the wall! The State Sticked it with Brim.
This DID attract Herons and other Wildlife!

Our backyard has 720' river frontage including a seasonal stream that empties into it. I wanted to dam the stream to create a pond and was told I needed permits from everybody and their brother agencies plus a design by the Army Corp of Engineers. Not being big on the beauracracy, I think Gene has a much better idea with his stream and wishing well. I do hope that some day the beavers will take on the job.
I was also informed, concerning a fish farm idea, that I could pull as much water as I wanted from the river but could not allow a single drop to trickle back in.
Good Luck
Dave

oh I don't live in the US guys Canada and i haven't looked into seeing if they will help with this, but if one is encouraging wildlife and is being creative and not making bombs or growing dope with the power that one is making i think things will be fine.......did you guys like the artificial beach, i would make one that's only about 50-75 feet wide and about 100' deep, i can see permits for some of these things will be a problem but when you live about 1 mile from the closest neighbor im not shure if that will be an issue, also im not ready for this build, i dont have that kind of money or time but i can see in the near future i will be buying a large property and i will start something
