Removal Of Fireplace Insert

My Mother wants to remove the insert from my Grandparents full masonry fireplace. I have no knowledge of this, but want to remove it. No idea of the make or model. Any help?

The flu has very likely been removed or otherwise butchered for the original install, if it was installed correctly. remove the face of the insert and investigate... couple of screws or? I wouldn't want to be the one to rebuild the flu.

Re: Removal Of Fireplace Insert

Some times the smoke shelf is chopped out to get the flue pipe from the insert to fit

Any one else here ever rebuild a flue from inside the chimney?? Now thats a lot of fun. really have to have faith in your top side helper

Re: Removal Of Fireplace Insert

i sold inserts and wood stoves for several years, and installed them.im not saying this is how they did it or not,but we always wired the damper open, then installed the insert.in this manner the fireplace was never damaged and it could be used again when whoever wanted to get rid of the insert.
my suggestion
cover flooring with heavy duty tarp.have a cart about the same heighth of hearth ready.pull the insert out a little and remove the surround(if it one that can be removed.you might want a shop vac handy to suck up soot and other crap.pull insert all the way out and sit on cart and remove from the room.insert is going to be heavy,so it is a two man job.
good luck

Re: Removal Of Fireplace Insert

What stacker said, and definitely have a shop vac handy and plugged in, there will be a lot of crap, fine soot and creosote on top of it. Also, if you put down some strips of plywood or lath, you can lift the leading edge onto a piece of copper pipe (or two) across the strips and roll it out. Those things can be very heavy.

I've had to rebuild the smokeshelf after pulling inserts before, as John says it ain't much fun.
