Grapevine jointing in Marble Falls, TX

Both buildings are granite rubble, probably circa 1920s. These show a couple of recent tuckpointing job, and it looks like the same mason did both.

Storefront:

House:

Both use colored mortar to match the stone, then a 3/8" bead of white mortar to define the joints.

I find grapevine joints a super pain in the arse to do. The mortar has to be absolutly perfect.

That red granite is nice. I pulled some out of the grout piles monday that looks just like that. I wonder where it's from.

Very nice! I've never done grapevining, but imagine it would be a pain.

WOW. that is a nice looking job. It is a pain in the arse though. Every now and again I'll toss a grapevine striker to a newbie laborer who has is just starting to get to strike a few block jobs. It's always a fun few minutes watching them try and figure out if they are holding the striker wrong, that look of "Man, I did this yesterday?".

I'll try to snap a few from the limestone structures around here. I stand in awe at some of the steeples and bell towers on churches built in the 1800's that sport a grapevine joint. Pre lifts and modern scaffolding I can't imagine the effort the masons went to, and then they took the time to do something decorative as well.

I didn't realize TX had red granite either. I always think limestone when I think of Austin. It's good to learn something.
