Finally went back to finish the chimney
Well, I think i have the picture posting thing down, so I will post what I did today and what the rest of the project looks like.
3 more feet and ready for a cap. Too bad rain is on for tomorrow.

The front door...
little window with limestone accents, was a little hesitant about this, but I think it turned out all right.

soldier course over garage doors with a keystone.
Nice project that had to wait for warmer weather to complete. HO was very understanding. He watched us fight the wind and cold for 10 days over christmas and newyears as we tried to finish the gable over the garage. rebuilt the canopy three times in one week and finally finished Jan. 3

Nice stuff there!
I personally dont care for the look of the raked joints, but thats just me.
You laid them nice and straight though, and thats the most important thing with raked joints. I've seen some houses with raked joints where they must have had kids laying the brick lol. Looked like a train wreck.

Looks great! I just discovered those split bedford keystones a few years ago, I try to use them every chance I get. Are those raked joints? Don't see those too often around here anymore. They really put your cuts out in the open for everyone to critique. Obviously you thought that out, because your cuts look great!

Very nice - especially with the accent pieces
You got the picture posting thing down, now to work on the resizing part
(800 x 600 = no scrolling which makes it easier for laptop's, & sight challenged people)

Thanks for the nice commens, not really fond of raking, but thats what they wanted so we had a skating party at the end of each day.
Thanks for the tip on resizing, I will play around and see if i can get it right.

Well, actually I'm 230 out of the shower and probably 240 with boots, hammer, trowel and whatever else I'm loaded up with. Believe it or not those planks are rated north of #750.
Ive been on one with another guy setting lintel over garage door, probably pushing 500 #'s. It does flex a little
When I get nervous I slide a 2 X in and all is good. I got a picture from yesterday, I'll post later. Never thought twice.

No offense intended, but who rates these plank? They look homeade, but I may be wrong. Personally, I think I'll stick with alum./ply combo plank with the hooks anytime I'm on outriggers. In all honesty tho, I'm not a big fan of heights!

Dude, there is no way you could set #750 in the center of that and not have it bust in half. You'd have enough toothpicks to last you your stay in the hospital and then some from the pieces of shrapnel lol.
All it is 2x and what, 5/8 ply?
Dont mean to get off topic, but I had to reply lol.

It's half inch ply and two 16" walkboards will hold a cube of brick. I wouldn't have believed it, but I saw it and its a fact.
Yea the boards are not the point of the thread, but it is funny what we notice when we look at pics.
Camera is in the truck or I would post the next move up up.

Well I'm on a picture roll, so here are the last pics of the chimney we finished last week. Here is the full scaffold in all its glory. I won't claim the design, but it gets me where I need to be and back down in one piece.
The more I look at that, what a hack. Please don't splatter that on a "here is what your scaffold should not look like" presentation.
Well we did finish.
I didn't like the fit of the SS cap so I am looking for another that will fit better. Helper dumped a walk board full of dust right on the chimney, you cas see the dusty spot.
We got rained off that thing back in November and we had to scramble to get it covered. It rained til late that evening. I went back around 10 and raked the joints. Not a happy day. Thats part of the reason I didn't get back to it til now. I wanted several days of decent weather.

Nice work on the chimney, & I can promise you I've been on worse scaffold than that. Just dont care to remember it!
But, after all the nice, hard work, are you sure you want to trust that chimney's future in the hands of a mortared cap? I've seem some that work for a long time, but far too many that shrink a & crack like crazy. I know concrete would be alot of work now, but the added asthetics/function of it may be well worth it.

Thats 4 bags of quickcrete 5000psi cement mix. 80 lb bags probably 5.5 inches thick in the middle.
