100 years and still smoking

Most of the coal fired brick kilns have gone the way of the 8 track player, but this one is still in production.

A peak inside... Anyone care to guess where this is located?

A final clue...

Not sure the EPA has jurisdiction in this area...

ACME Brick Company?

Isn't that where Wile E. Coyote bought most of his supplies?

Jasper Co.
Rensselaer area

I'm not giving up the brick yard just yet, someone knows the place I'm sure.

Yes its still active as of last friday any way, but Dan had a little deer in the head lights look. Judging by all the brick sitting around, I can't blame him.

Nah, only the rockets he strapped to his back side to chase road runner down.

I picked up a load of clinkers there,
Place hasn't changed much.

Yea, even the prices are still mostly in the $300's per thousand.

A recent experience with Colonial

On Friday two weeks ago, I stopped in Lafayette, IN to source a brick for a repair job. Unfortunately we could not come up with a great replacement color that matched.

I also asked about a brick from Colonial that is still in production today. The distributer price for the particular brick from Colonial was $510 per thousand plus tax and delivery.

I then drove to Colonial and tried to source a match for the repair job. Dan, the manager/owner ? said they didn't stock a brick similar to my sample, but he said they could make one from scratch and get pretty close for about $300 per thousand. I couldn't believe he would do it that cheap, but he said they were looking for any business they could get. I told him I only needed 3,000 or so, and he said it didn't matter. (Dan also offered to make them standard length which is 8" long so they would match up to the existing brick which were laid in 1972)

This made me think about the other brick I priced earlier that day at Lafayette, so I asked about this other brick. $260/ thousand plus tax, picked up at the plant. Exactly half the price I was quoted just 2 hours before.

If I ever have to match an older brick again, which I will, the first place I am going is Colonial Brick, since they seem to understand the restoration business and are willing to work with smaller numbers. I just hope they can hold out through the down cycle.

All good information.

If I had even thought about them,
I would have assumed any outfit
that small would have disappeared
by now.
Good for them!
