Why Would A Plumbing Stack 'break'

I'm doing a crawlspace remedaition job which was due to a broken wye, which is a junction point for 6 apartments before heading into the main sewer line.

On a previous job I ran across a bad pipe joint (~20 yr old apartments) which was leaking...passed the info on to the super, but it appeared to have been a bad glue joint.

Any reasons for a 4" wye failing? I didn't get close enough to see where this occured, but it looks like the joint of the wye heading to the sewer pipe. could settling have caused this problem? Any other ideas?

Yes settling could be the cause, unsupported pipe, expansion and contraction of the drain, bad glue joint, that's a few reasons.
