I just went thru a fiasco where the tile guy did the pan and he flooded out the house.

As for mold, can someone explain this mold phenomenon? I’ve never seen it. What would this mold be eating? What is in that 1/4" layer at the bottom of the mortar bed that the mold is eating? The mortar? Are you saying that if I pour some mortar in a kiddy pool and then pour some water in after it hardens mold with start to grow???
Are you telling me you have never ripped out a mortar bed and not seen black mould?? Seriously??

Add some body oil, soap film, etc to your kiddy pool and watch!

Water beats everything... rock, paper, scissors, grout, and mortar.

With no pre-slope, water that penetrates the tile saturates the bed and then sits. This creates a constant wet environment in the shower and leads to mold, mildew and fungus growth above AND below the mud bed.

There's more to building a quality shower pan than just keeping the water above the liner.

Amen to that!!

And to protech plumbing - even though I consider myself an expert when it comes to bathroom remodelling, I never, ever, consider myself to smart not to learn about new things. Not all I will agree with or like, but, I would have never found out about things like Schluter Systems or Panasonic exhaust fans.

Re: Who Installs The Shower Pan Liner In Your Area?

Protech and others,

The issue with the preslope has nothing to do with leaks, and the ability to install a liner properly. Without a preslope, there is always a little water that cannot make it into the weep holes. This water contains soap, bacteria from those showering, etc... Plenty of stuff for mold to feed on. The amount of water that remains on the liner depends on how high the drain was set, lumps on the slab or subfloor, levelness of subfloor, etc. I've pulled out a few that were 20 years old and clean as a whistle. I pulled one out less than a year old and I wanted to puke.

Two of the biggest complaints we see on the JohnBridge forum from homeowners is mold along the bottom of their shower, and funky smell. Disgusting water trapped on the liner is almost always the issue.

UPC has a section requiring preslopes, though it mat not be adopted in all areas of the country.. I guess it's not in your area yet.

I think it would be a good service for you to do.. Sell it as a necessary service your competition wont do, and charge accordingly.

Uniform Plumbing Code related to shower pan construction.

"412.8 When the construction of on-site built-up shower receptors is
permitted by the Administrative Authority, one of the following means shall
be employed:
(1) Shower receptors built directly on the ground:
Shower receptors built directly on the ground shall be watertight and shall
be constructed from approved type dense, non-absorbent and non-corrosive
materials. Each such receptor shall be adequately reinforced, shall be
provided with an approved flanged floor drain designed to make a watertight
joint in the floor, and shall have smooth, impervious, and durable surfaces.
(2) Shower receptors built above ground:
When shower receptors are built above ground the sub-floor and rough side of
walls to a height of not less than three (3) inches (76 mm) above the top of
the finished dam or threshold shall be first lined with sheet plastic*,
lead* or copper* or shall be lined with other durable and watertight
materials.
All lining materials shall be pitched one-quarter (1/4) inch per foot
(20.9 mm/m) to weep holes in the subdrain of a smooth and solidly formed
sub-base.
All such lining materials shall extend upward on the rough jambs
of the shower opening to a point no less
than three (3) inches (76 mm) above the top of the finished dam or threshold
and shall extend outward over the top of the rough threshold and be turned
over and fastened on the outside face of both the rough threshold and the
jambs."

WOW! I started this thread and maybe I should finish it. I did not intend for this to get so personal and defensive between either trade. WE ARE ALL PROS HERE. We should also be respectful. This issue of pre-slope will probably
be debated for decades still to come. I thank everyone that participated. I got my answer. The plumber does sometimes and the tile setter does sometimes. Period.

You know, I just re-read that post and was laughing my a** off when I looked at this one.

PGC - as you are using this forum to conduct market research for your mysterious new revolutionary contraption, I'd like my $1000.00 fee.

I would normally say make that in US funds, but from the look of the looney, its just about the same anyway!

Re: Who Installs The Shower Pan Liner In Your Area?

Most of you guys have had fun with the cement board shower pans already.
I just posted a comment there and will say about the same thing here. This forum is just a myspace page for a few guys. I doubt if John Bridge meant it to be but in just my short experience it is.I won't bother your club anymore.
There is no revelations here that I can't live without. Like I said on the other page, go ahead and have some more fun at my expense. No need for me to post anything else here. I will be fine.

Wow, I did not know that John Bridge started Contractor Talk!

See, old dogs can learn new things!!

But Seriously, you come on here looking for feedback on an idea that you won't actually disclose while proving that you really don't know a lot about how showers should be built.

If you want redemption, show us your amazing invention.

If it is truly as good as you think it is, I'll eat my words.

Even if it didnt meet acceptable testing standards, there's quite a few of us here who were interested in hearing about your design...
