Where Do I Start. Plumbing

hey all,

I am new to the forum. I am 28 and am trying to become a cop, however I am keeping my options open. I got a BS degree in Justice Studies, and graduated from a Police Academy, but there are no guarantees to this field.

I am very good with tools from being a mechanic.

I live in the bay area of California.

I am wondering where or how do I start a career in plumbing? It sounds like a good paying trade; how do you guys like the work?

TIA

Pay has very little to do with it.If your are good and ethical you can make a living doing anything you love.If you want easy money, plumbing ain't it.
If you want to plumb then you will have to start at the bottom and dig trenches and break concrete and be a gofor for a while like the rest of us.
Google plumbing for your area and see if their are tech schools and vocational type schools to get a head start.I was a poor man and joined the Air Force in 81' and learned plumbing there.Talk to Plumbers in your area.

Re: Where Do I Start. Plumbing

decide on what you really want to do. Cop or a plumber. Pro and Cons for both. But i think you have better growth potential being a plumber. A licensed plumber though, which in NYC takes upto 8 years i believe. First you have to show payroll records working with a plumber for x years. long process, but worth it. I know a guy who makes a ton of money just signing off other peoples jobs, all he keeps is a small crew for service calls/commercial work

Just remember: **** runs downhill; payday's on Friday; and wash your hands before you eat. If you can remember that, you've got a good start.

Re: Where Do I Start. Plumbing

Sorry, guys - that's how I learned the plumber's credo from Big Art Chaput in Denver Colorado, back in '76.

I'll tell a story some time, of when big Art's brand new Ridgid pipe threader got stolen from the job..............Art was heart broken, and out an automatic threader! Or when he used me for a level to plumb a waste stack at a McDonald's job we had.

Them were the days.

Re: Where Do I Start. Plumbing

I'm so old, I still solder copper pipe; I remember pouring a lead joint once!

Back in the day, we used to wipe our feet before we entered a house and we installed avocado colored fixtures. We drove around in full sized Chevy's with 2-way radios, swilling 7-11 coffee and spitting tobacco on the rubber floor. We smoked, swore, worked on Saturday and never went to church.
On the job, we mostly worked hard, air tested everything, had a few leaks, jockeyed for joist space with electricians, fought with drywallers and wiped every solder joint - even hidden ones.
We had Beer-Friday, drank with the boss, never looked at his wife and let him beat us at pool at his annual Christmas party.
We all drove home in trucks, hunted and fished and lied about our golf.

Man, I wish my back would have held up better.

Regards
