Water Heater Going Bad?

We have a 6 yr old water heater (gas). The last couple of days it is not heating up like it should, showers are warm but not hot. I know nothing about these so any help would be great. I opened the door on it and the flame is fine, and there is no dirt under the burner and it is not rusted out. Do I need a new heater or what?
