Venting For Toilet Dillema

Hi, got a quick question on a house that I am renovating. I will be calling in a plumber to potentially solve this problem, but wanted to get a sense of my options.

The house has two stacks (not sure why). Most of the existing plumbing goes through one stack, which is fine. The second stack has only a 1st floor toilet running into it. The stack looked like it ran horizontal with the 1st floor joists and then up the wall. Upon further review, there is no vent coming through the roof and nothing out the side of the wall. Apparently the vent goes horizontal and then no where.

Obviously the toilet is not flushing properly since it is not vented properly. Can that stack be vented out the side of the house? Is an AAV an option here? Is my only option to have the plumbing run into the other stack (which is not the greatest option because of the position furnace and HWT). Wanted to get some feedback prior to calling a plumber.

Thanks anyways Ron. Anyone else have a suggestion? Is it possible to do a 2" take off from the Toilet line and add a AAV?

I would definatly say that someone has f--ked some plumbing up in the past?I think you should check all plumbing with the help of a qualified and EXPERIANCED plumber!there may be more problems there than you think . when was house built?

I thought they all had to vent to the roof. I'll also be the first to admit I know nothing about plumbing and rely too much on my plumber's knowledge on everything...

fumbrunner:

I am not in Canada, but pretty much you would have to
1. Vent to your other stack or
2. try to somehow go up thru the roof.

That would be your best and safest bet. AAV are not reccomended and against code in many places. As for going thru the wall You can ask a local plumber or inspector to see if it would be acceptable. In many places it is not, thus I would not reccomend, but of course the final desition is yours.

Hope this helps, please post what plumber or inspector told you for future knowledge.

Re: Venting For Toilet Dillema

Thanks guys. Had my plumber in today and his recommendation is to have it run to the other stack. It's going to take away some room in the basement, but we do not have any other options. Cant vent to outside wall, cant use AAV. Just wanted to make sure that he was giving me good advice, and given the posts here, it sounds like he is right on.

Thanks.

It was built in the early 1900s but has some considerable DIY work on it that I have had to largely undo
