Question

Vent Problem?

OK, tell me if I am right. I was at a friends house the other night when I heard all this gurgling from the kitchen sink, then a bad whiff

They told me it does this all the time. I had them recycle the washing machine which is over 20' away and sure enough, I saw water rise in the sink trap and then get sucked out.

Construction: Slab (plumbing under/in concrete)

Condo

Kitchen Sink should be the furthest fixture on the line. Washing Machine Next and then the Sewer Main as far as I can tell.

There is a garbage disposal on the kitchen sink, Water filled to the top of the knives. There is a dishwasher too, but no smell was in the dishwasher.

Only does it with the washing machine. Not the toilets, showers or sinks.

I think the vent is blocked up. What say you?

Re: Vent Problem?

May pertain to you but i was doing a kitchen a while back and they had a straight tee not a sanitary one and the water was being forced both ways. To the sink and also down the to the sewer. I had to replace the tee and make it a y. So when the washer machine was on and the ejector pit pushed the water to the sewer line it could not run back to the sink. Sorry if that is confusing.

Does your plumbing code require a seperate waste for kitchen wastes that go to a grease basin before tieing into the sanitary sewer?

The drain branch that picks up the laundry and the kitchen is partially blocked between the laundry and the sanitary sewer, get someone out there to rod the kitchen sink waste.

Re: Vent Problem?

Could be that the line is "Wet Vented" and the washer is UPHILL from the sink, thats a big no no when wet venting, the washer MUST be tied in well downhill from every other fixture. If it is tied in before the sink there is a possibility that with these new washers having a high volume pump will flood the line and cause it to back up into the sink. OR the main line could be partly cloged.

What was going on when this happened? Was the washer running? If so, Killer has nailed it. Get the line cleaned.

Yes, the clothes washer was running, the sink and dishwasher have no problem draining, but its easy enough to snake the line from the kitchen.

Also, I was looking at it yesterday and the washer discharge hose is put into a rubber coupling. Its grey with little vent slots, but the slots seem to be tight (closed) however, it is such a long run between there and the kitchen sink, I can't see how it could back fill all the way to there without other issues happening.

I'll snake it for them and see how it goes from there.
