Vent Distances

My reference books tell me that maximum distance traps can be from a vent are:

Pipe size Distance to vent
1 1/2" 3 1/2'
2" 5'
3" 6'
4" 10'

I've worked in many houses there is no vent that I can see that would be within these distance limits. In many cases there would be no possible route that a pipe could get back to the stack within these distances. I guess what I'm asking is, is this common and not really a problem ? Or are these all cases of unpermitted work or lax inspectors ?

Can't speak for Philly, but it may be older than when this requirement hit their code. Or, knowing what kind of reputation Philly inspectors have, who knows?

Another possibility is that you aren't understanding what you are seeing. It could be meeting code but not look like what you are used to seeing.

Re: Vent Distances

Philly Dude, obviously not a registered plumber, but your distances are way off. Philly has its own code. Small fixtures can be a maximum of 12 feet from a vented line and large fixtures can be a maximum of 8 feet from a vented line. Large fixture: toilet, small fixture: mostly anything else. These distances only apply in the city once you go into Bucks, Montco, Delaware and Chester counties it is BOCA or national or whatever they are calling it today.

Re: Vent Distances

jja : I see the 8' and 12' numbers in section 1105.2 of Philly's plumbing code. Is that what you are referring to ?

Re: Vent Distances

section 1105.2 exactly. If you go over the distances you can revent at half the size of the pipe (1.5 min.) , unless there are 2 fixtures then you must revent at full size.

Re: Vent Distances

My house (circa 1864) was never vented until I added one just before the main leaves the house. I'll be adding another when I put a 1/2 bath in the office. All I need to start is a round toit.

Good Luck
Dave

You can get it where I am but it is more expensive than 1 1/2" in most cases so there is really no use for it
