Tubing Cutters
Currently I have all ridgid tubing cutters for copper. I have a different brand for cutting CSST, but it's really a lennox. Anyhow, I love......I say again I LOVE my spring loaded cutters. I own all the sizes, but I mainly use my 1/2" - 2" cutters for most of my work. Here is my problem, that damm pin that holds the cutter wheel in place keeps comming loose. The pin has a little........ummm like a ball spring that holds it in place. Well that little ball sucks and the pin works itself loose and causes all sorts of issues when cutting. Anyone figure out a way to fix this, or is there another manufacturer that makes cutters that are spring loaded too?
Thx edit: ![]() part #2...that little silver ball is what starts to let go, and the pin slides out a littlebit, causing that pin head (lol) to turn during cutting. Over time it erodes the pin lock head and renders the cutter useless...

Re: Tubing Cutters
Jim.
Just get a replacement pin for it. I know Reed and Lennox both are spring loaded cutters, I use both, Reed for the 3" and 4" pipe and Ridgid for the 1-1/2" and 2" pipe, Reed for coper cutting, |

Re: Tubing Cutters
In a pinch I picked up a Lennox awhile back. It works so smooth I honestly don't miss the spring loaded part. In fact, my Ridgid spring loaded is fairly new but it is my shop cutters now and the Lennox is in my tool box.
At the time the Lennox was blue with a black knob. It was actually a rebranded Rothenberger. Not sure who makes them now as they are white with a blue knob and a different style. |

Re: Tubing Cutters
I've always favored Imperial tubing cutters. They seem to roll the least burr inside. I think they had a ratcheting version years before anyone else, and their "little imp" was at one point the tightest tubing cutter you could get.

Re: Tubing Cutters
The original imp was awesome, I still have a few, the replacement model is a bit larger, just enough to make it not fit in the really tight places the original imp would.

Re: Tubing Cutters
I also like the Imperial cutters.
But that may be that many years ago I did commercial refrigeration work, and it seems that the refrigeration guys use Imperial and the plumbers use Rigid, etc. |

Re: Tubing Cutters
Imperial markets to HVAC/Refridgeration and Ridgid markets to plumbers. Oh, and DIYers now.

James
I replaced the pins in the shops Ridgid cutters with Reed pins, and this is no longer a problem. I replaced all my personal Ridgid cutters with Reed cutters a year or so ago because of this problem, and found I like the Reed's a lot more.

Re: Tubing Cutters
Ok so I ordered a few Reeds....
![]() ![]() I'll put them through their paces in a few days. Thanks for the tips... I didn't see any imperial cutters that were spring loaded.....I have a few non loaded cutters and I just hate them, I won't use them. So we'll see how these fair!

Re: Tubing Cutters
Imperial does make a spring loaded cutter, they are called Adjust-O-Matic. But they are in the larger sizes or slightly larger like 3/8" to 2 5/8" and larger.

Re: Tubing Cutters
Just take a 20 penny or whatever size nail fits it best and pull it through and bend it to keep it from coming back out.
Ya gotta improvise man, lol. |

Re: Tubing Cutters
Improvise? That's more like ghetto rig. I'll spend the money for good tools.

Re: Tubing Cutters
I'll improvise to get me though the day, but not as something permanent that I'm going to use every day. I know this sort of improvising as "farm rigging". (make it work until you can take a trip into town).

Re: Tubing Cutters
I'm using Reed cutters and I have the same problem. One has the pin and I have to watch to make sure it's fully inserted. The other has screws and they're forever unwinding. I guess I should put some of the thread locker on it that I carry in my tool box . . .
