Re: Tub

I don't have a lot of experience with Americast so I hope I haven't really screwed up but I just installed one in my house. It appears to basically be a steel tub with about an inch or so of polysumthinorother on the back side of the tub so it should hold up about the same way a steel tub would without the flex and noise. At least that is what I am hoping.

I hope you luck.
Customer picked out an Americast sink
@ 8 years ago, and it looked so good
I got one too.

Though it was caulked and set in caulk
mine started to rust from under the rim
in about 3 years.
Customer's is still fine, installed
the same way by the same fool.

Other than that I like the design, and it's
as quiet as a cast iron.

Re: Tub

In theory, the Americast should resist chips better than cast iron. In practice, Americast has their problems.

I put one in my own house. I liked the idea of a solid tub with lighter weight. I installed it on a Sunday, and I noticed a bulge in the apron. Well, you have to be looking for it, and it's never been a problem.

But the manufacture of Americast fixtures seems to be pretty iffy. I've talked to plumbers who said that they've had to replace every one they've put in. Personally, I haven't. I have replaced several Americast sinks because they got chipped or because the plastic was delaminating. Their warranty sucks.

I also have an Americast sink. When I bought it, the box was damaged but I looked over the sink and it seemed to be fine. It wasn't until I got coffee stains in the small basin that I saw the star crack on the corner. But I've had it for more than six years and as long as it's clean you can't see it.

When I told the supply house about it, they offered to give me a sink from display, and I didn't think that the odds were good that it would be any better than the one I had.

The tub's also been in for a number of years, with no problems. (The bulge is still there . . .)

Now, I have to consider that today's cast iron is really junk compared to the stuff we used to get. One customer with an Americast sink wanted me to replace it with cast iron, and she picked one from the supply house that was super cheap. When I saw it, I couldn't believe anyone would want it. I was back at her house after about two years and the sink looks like hades. She asked if I could get some kind of paint to cover the imperfections that were showing up.

From what I've seen of the brand name cast iron, it isn't much better - all rippled and uneven. So, for my money, I'd spend a little less and get an Amercast.

Your mileage may vary.

Re: Tub

I use the americast tubs and they are ok, price is good, lightweight especially when we are usually asking the plumber to set the cast iron monsters
