Toilet Fill Valve Slams Shut

I have one toilet in my house where the valve slams shut. It shuts with a, Fwump!! It does this one time when it closes after the tank fills.

I replaced the valve thinking that a newer one may cure it, but it has not. It doesn't water hammer more than that one time.

Is there another way to solve that other than turning the source water valve to the tank way down? Is there an adjustable fill valve out there?

I am an irrigator and understand water hammer. I need a professional plumber opinion on this.

Thanks,
Michael

Somebody's bound to want to know what the water pressure is set at for your house. Closed system or no?

The water pressure is 56psi.

I don't know what closed or open system means in this situation. Please explain then I can tell you.

Re: Toilet Fill Valve Slams Shut

It is a Korky anti-siphon quiet fill. I had a ball type float and fill valve before and it did the same thing. I thought this one may be a slower closing type since it was quiet.

Yeah, I like it, but it didn't solve my slamming shut issue.

Re: Toilet Fill Valve Slams Shut

Ordinarily I'd say install a compression tank on the main, but 56 psi isn't that high.
Though It couldn't hurt to put one in.
Could also be a loose water line in the wall or floor.

Re: Toilet Fill Valve Slams Shut

Before doing anything else, try partially closing the valve to the toilet.
Might work, but will slow down the fill time.

Re: Toilet Fill Valve Slams Shut

Is that the answer? Open the valve only a little bit? I replaced a dinosaur toilet yesterday for a brother in law and had the exact same issue of water cut-off with a antisyphon type fill valve it drove me nuts. The old piping was iron and I thought when I had the valve open to much I was drawing debris through the line causeing it to cease or clog. When I finally had enough I had the valve open just enough to fill with-out shutting down. I was ready to change the fill valve and all. What a coincidence this thread. Loose water line in the floor or wall---how is this an issue?

They make these little small ones for that exact problem (little bladder which neutrailizes the thump). If you can get it to fit under toliet. There best used on washer machine water conection which can cause a thump in the water line when turn off quickly i will find it and post back.

Re: Toilet Fill Valve Slams Shut

Sorry for turning up an old issue here but can I have an issue with the flexible supply line? Someone decided to open the valve up to increase the fill speed. I told them it was my understanding the water pressure was to strong to leave it till I get a bladder to compress the pressure. This house is at the base of several high rise apt buildings so pressure made sense. To reset the thing I figuired I would need to depressurized the antisyphon by diconnecting the water supply. I turned on the water with the tank disconnected and zero water flow passed throught the line. I totaly removed it blew air through it, reconnected it and it worked again. They have no other issue with the upstairs bath just the basement. Is there another avenue I could look into?
