Toilet Backdrain?

OK, this is my own house, the plumbing has been in place since the 60's. I have remodeled 2 baths that are back to back, but did not change the lav. locations and or plumbing(I did not notice this issue prior to removal but also did not study for it either). The 2 lavs sit on a common wall and drop through the floor to a Y that feeds to the outgoing septic, vent is 4"+- copper that runs vertically off of the intersection. We have installed new Kohler low consumption lavs in both rooms. However when you flush the master the secondary bath girgles, slowly looses water, the result is after a couple of flushes (in the master)the water is down to almost nothing in the secondary toilet. My concern of course is methane leaking up. The interesting thing is that it dos not occur in the opposite, so when you flush the seconday it has not affect on the master toilet water level. Thoughts?????

Re: Toilet Backdrain?

I have seen toilets that leak the trap dry through the drain, manufacturing prob. Also some toilets can have a weak trap seal..virtuous china is very jiggly when mollded and some traps can flatten more than others. Other than that is a venting prob, but I would suspect both wc to suffer.

Re: Toilet Backdrain?

Its sounds to me as it has inadequate venting.

Re: Toilet Backdrain?

Thanks guys, I appreciatte the input. My curiosity is, were the vent and plumbing configuration is the exact same for both toilets, assuming it is a venting issue, why wouldonly one toilet be affected? I will try to take a picture of the drain and vent assembly for you, as I understand blind questions are subject to interpretation.

sounds like a vent problem.you may need a AAV (AUTOMATIC AIR REMITANCE VALVE). fitted to the ventpipe which the wc is connected to.goodluck PLUMBFIX !!
