Sweating Copper Pipes

Okay, maybe somebody here can settle this argument. I think we have too much time on our hands for this even to come up.

Regarding the flame on a torch used to heat copper pipes, which part of the flame is the hottest?

My friend swears that the closer you hold the pipe to the nozzle the hotter the flame is.

I on the other hand believe that farther out towards the tip of the flame is the hottest part. I guess that leaves the middle area open for someone else to prefer.

So which is it? The end of the flame, the middle, or close to the nozzle?

Re: Sweating Copper Pipes

The hottest point of any flame is at the tip of the inner cone where it meets the deeper-colored outer flame. So I say it's the middle. This is for a typical propane torch - which I use for sweating pipes and soldering.
