Split ABS Drain Pipe

Hey guys (and gals!)

I just saw the strangest thing at a buddies place:

He had a leak in the 1 1/2" ABS drain pipe leading from his kitchen. A 6' section of pipe has split (almost the entire length) lengthwise. Another piece had a split around the circumfrance.

I have been doing bathrooms/renos for 20+ years - never seen anything like it.

It is on an outside wall - but inside the insulation

The only explanation I could give was he had some crappy pipe.

Anyone else seen this?

Re: Split ABS Drain Pipe

Is there a clean out somewhere in this run where someone could have applied way too much torque in screwing a plug back in?

Otherwise it defies logic. The supply pipes are intact and in the same general area?

Re: Split ABS Drain Pipe

Hello, yes most likely a defect in the pipe during manufacturing(weak fusion at seam or at roll off/cutting stage) I have seen a few of these. ABS is not the greatest thing these days. PVC, no doubt better choice.
I have seen a lot of different things in the manufacturing end of it and sometimes the quality control allows a few things get by more than once.

Are you the guy in the red shirt?

PS-be very careful about promoting your product here. In other words, don't do it. With your plumbing background you will be a nice addition to the forum. Let us come to you about the belt (it's pretty cool though)

Re: Split ABS Drain Pipe

It was probabally made in China. I saw this once with copper pipe. We took a loss on that one!
