Soldering

I was soldering a cap on a supply line yesterday and i noticed that after i added the solder to the cap and i went to wipe off the excess the cap was spinning on the top of the copper pipe... so i stopped wiping and after about two seconds the cap seemed securely soldered onto the supply line... is this common.. does it usually take a second or so for the reaction to take or did i compromise the fitting... There are no leaks but curious for the future. Thanks

Re: Soldering

It seems more and more the pipe and fitting tolerances are hit and miss...... but as BM said, happens all the time...just hold in on the fitting as you wipe.

Re: Soldering

Pasquale... this is another thread that demonstrates that you have no business in the 'handyman' business. Stick to what you know. If you were competent in "soldering", you'd have called it "sweating".

I agree... You sound like a leak looking for a place to happen...

Hope you're paid up on your insurance.

Re: Soldering

md.. stick to electricity.... It's obviously what YOUR good at... I own 13 rental units and HAVE to be a jack of all trades or I'll go broke. Being a landlord who's also the property manager, leasing agent, repair man...etc... is not that fun to say the least.. especially in todays market. Thanks for making me explain myself.... AGAIN.... and i will continue to "SWEAT" pipes and change my own light fixtures wheater you like it or not.... Yeah.. sounds great to hire someone everytime something goes wrong... but it's not practical. Lighten up. You need to find a woman.
BTW.. at what point in my original thread did i claim to be competant in sweating pipes.. Don't put words in my mouth. Thanks for the responses from everyone else...Md.. go back to kicking your dog around the house.

So... it's okay to do illegal plumbing work as long as it's unaffordable for you to hire a real plumber. Got it.

Re: Soldering

I think that once someone owns X amount of rental properties they shouldn't have to be subject to permits. I mean hell who cares about the bottom feeders living in them anyhow? The money he saving should cover his deductables should he kill some families....and it's no SWEAT for anybody. I propose new gas services for everybody. Surley a Jack of All Trades can knock that out in a jiffy. Permits...Hermits

My dog is sleeping on an blanket on the floor that's supposed to be on the couch. He must have taken it off the couch. I'm not that happy about it, but I'm not going to kick him.

Re: Soldering

Not to hijack the thread or anything but,

Back in 1980 I was retiling a shower on a low income rental owned by the township, a suburb of Chicago. The local building department managed the property. I told the inspector the valve was leaking inside the wall and needed to be changed prior to closing up the wall. He asked if I knew how to sweat copper. I responded that I did but I wasn't a licensed plumber. He (the building inspector) said I didn't need to be licensed unless I was working on the DWV side.

When one has to second guess a soldered up joint, they need to put the torch down.

Don't be so sure. If it's not owner occupied, all those "log cabin" rules that some states have go out the window. In many jurisdictions where plumbing is regulated, it is indeed illegal to do your own plumbing even in your own home. The laws vary, but I am famaliar with the laws where Pasquale operates, and what he does in his rentals is largely illegal, in my opinion. It sort of ticks me off when I guy openly brags about what might be illegal activity and tries to claim that beacuse he's such a poor businessman and can't make his properties properly cash flow, he has to do seemingly illegal work.

Re: Soldering

You guys are too funny.
I learned once, all it took was one guy to actually call me and ask what I used for stock, size pipe & best location I'd plan to run it.
He "wanted to know the quality of my workmanship"...like a fool I realized I'd spent my time offering a free tutorial when he never got back to me and didn't return my calls.

What do you do now to avoid that?

Similar, I just give 'em a price, if I sense they're window shopping I'll even bid high for giggles. (speeds up the inevitable process)
Heck, they prolly won't pay anyone anyway.
Though admittedly I get a few occasionally that call back to schedule...those are the ones the wife says "thats what ya get for prejudging".
