Sill Cocks And Siding

When removing 2 or more layers of siding, and going back with a single layer of vinyl, there is now a large gap between the flange on the sill cock and the face of the split block siding mount. I know that the new freeze proof sill cocks come with a plastic shim, do they make anything along these lines that will take care of a 1"+ gap, or multiple shims that could be put together. Or any other solution aside from having a plumber cut and re solder the valves every time.

Re: Sill Cocks And Siding

Timeless has a petty workable idea. Ron the only issue with the block, is getting it behind there. I do not want to have to remove the sill cock, And i dont care to hire a plumber. Right now we just leave them as is and the homeowner can do whatever they want when we leave. Thought it would be nice if I could come up with something to make it look better.

If nothing is dont, and we simply just use long screws, aside from looking ugly, is there a significant chance of damage to the pipe under normal use of taking a hose on and off?

Should not hurt it, I've seen hose bibs that did not even have it secured to the wall and they been that way for years, but do use longer screws, some secureness is better then none.

Re: Sill Cocks And Siding

Why not just split a block to use as a mounting pad inside a receptacle mount and trim the block in metal. Split everything so it can slip around existing pipe and screw the sill cock to it. As long as it doesn't wind up recessed, its not gonna look like a train wreck. We can get some that are like 6x8 inches and presplit.

Nothing will look right, but this is bound to look less 'wrong' than just putting longer screws in it.

Thought of that. The problem is the sill cocks are out too far for a split block, yet not out far enough to fit a J block..... Like I said, I dont really care, as its not my fault they had 3 layers of siding on the house to begin with. Just trying to make them look as nice as I can without going overboard

I asked my brother in law about this, he does siding work, he keeps a piece of Trex decking in several different colors on his truck, and uses the color that is the closest match to make a spacer block to go between the back of the sillcock and the siding with a jig saw. I have never seen what it looks like, but it may be worth a try.

Just remember if you do a block, please drill the hole to 1-3/8" at least, if you know what it's like to remove a hosebib and the hole is too small, it will piss off your plumber.

My Brother in law doesn't drill a hole in it, he makes a u-shaped spacer the same as the one provided with some sillcocks.

Tell him thanks for me, most don't understand the back end of most hosebibs as with frost proof type are larger then the center. Add swelling of the wood, and your fighting to get it out of the wall.

Why should we care about the plumber? haha just kidding! But seriously though, we do a lot of things to make other trades jobs easier, not just on new houses, but on remodels, I like to think ahead to things that might be done 10 years from now, and make sure that what I do accommodates these things But sometimes I just get the feeling of "why bother" since no one ever bothers to think of us when they do their job

Ron, in new construction, do you
a) install your exterior fixtures before the siding, and have the sider install a mount,
b) Mark your fixtures before the siding, and have the sider install a mount, and then you install your fixture
c) Wait till the siding is done, and just drill though the siding, and install your fixtures to the siding with no mount
or D) Do you show up after the siders, drill holes everywhere and expect the siders to come back and install mounts for you after the fact?

To often builders think that the siders should decide the layout for all electrical and plumbing fixtures, or come back after the fact and cut all the crap in. One of the many reasons we will no longer be doing any more work for builders

I am getting sick of asking this question and getting blank stares in answer.

Or asking the brick mason and being told 4 to 5 inches.

Ugh!

Re: Sill Cocks And Siding

I don't do many sided houses, but I do the same thing a do for brick ones, I drill the hole and send the sillcock through, but I don't connect it, I leave it loose till the exterior finish is on and then connect it, so that the brickie or the sider can move if need be.

Is this a multiple choice question? Have not had one of these since grade school.

Which is the correct answer?
OK who has the cheat sheet?
