With my prescription, I can get a pair of glasses made in China and shipped to me in 2-3 weeks for $100. I can get a pair locally same day for $300.

If my current pair fell into a wood chipper today, I'd be spending the $300.

I just wonder when I'll be able to get away with dynamic pricing.

Sometimes the price differences happen where one might least expect them. One of our Mercedes dealers has jacked up the part prices vs. competing Mercedes dealers...by hundreds and more at times. (We used to have an old 300 TD wagon.) When I asked them about it, they shrugged and said they set their own prices.

Things like dealer part cost can be very zip code sensitive.

I have to drive all over some times to find a specific product around here. More and more often, internet order can be a faster route.

So consider this?...??..

You get the call for the repair. You show up. Because you have the forethought to inventory the part required, you pull it out of the back of your van.

You bought it over the web for $30.

How much to you assign for the part when you invoice?

Inventory vs Supply House ? Good question ? I don't do inventory really.

There is another of the same I'll replace. I'll get it online for $35.

Friday's part I'll charge 145-155. What about the same part I order online ? I'll probably adjust for the benefit of the customer. We'll see ?

Most don't realize how powerful that actually is... entire markets are driven by it (just look at Black Friday coming up as one example)...

But it's a dual-edged sword as most want to be able to charge as much as possible or need to for what they do while paying the least for what others offer...

If you charge time for going to get the part, the total job price already reflects savings to the customer. Win - win.

My inclination would be to charge something close to your local market plus mark-up.

This makes me consider NOS parts that are no longer available from most normal channels. I have an ASKO DW that has now failed on two occasions. The impeller is about $.02 worth of plastic. The plastic between the center (axle) and the blades is subject to breakage over the course of service.

About 5 years ago I had to try and find a replacement impeller and everywhere I went (online) it was NoLongerAvailable. How is it 2 cents worth of plastic is enough to dumpster a $1k DW? Anyhow, it didn't. I made a reinforcing plate from copper sheet which I riveted to the impeller.

Forward to this summer and the impeller housing started leaking. Upon inspection it showed a hairline fracture. Try and find and everywhere it's NLA. eBay for a used one thankfully.

I am wandering off topic a little bit, but there is a point If you are the one out sleuthing for parts, who should be the beneficiary?.. You know you benefit if it's something for your personal consumption, but how do you value it when it's for a customer?

Re: Same Part -- $25 - $140 ?

The way this went, there was the cost of the part sourced kocally, plus cost of trip to get it, plus cost of down time (incurred by the restaurant). The restaurant still comes out ahead if you buy for $30 and charge local source price plus trip fee.

IMO you only stock parts like that which out a lot of money in your pocket, you nay not need another for years.

As long as you're passing along the cost and still making the margin you need plus profit, doesn't really matter what the part cost...
