Rubber Or Wax?

Whenever I re and re a toilet, or install a new one, I always use a wax seal. As far as I know, nowadays it's pretty well standard issue. However , every now and then I bump into a plumber who swears by rubber seals (sometimes even doubled up). What do you guys use?

If you have a marble floor use the rubber seal. the oils in the wax can leech
out and stain the marble permanently. They will work their way out from under the bowl and stain the marble.

I was watching the DIY show on dish network. "Ed the Plumber". That is his advice.

Re: Rubber Or Wax?

Old school is the best school, use wax seal!! All this so called new and improve items are not, some of the materials over the years were great and still are , pvs , copper.
then came poly pipe, flex p-traps etc. etc. that cost contractors!!!!!, homeowners & insurance companies thousands of dollars. Not to mention that alot of these products were made for the DIY customer so the companies can increase their profits .

Try to send these jobs overseas!!

tzzzz, you left out aluminum wiring and Qest plumbing.

I want a practical test period of about 30 yrs. before I incorporate it into my jobs. At least you have a history to fall back on if there is a lawsuit.

I carry and install only the combanation seals, they are a mix of both wax and neoprene. Pvc lines have a tendency to do a lot of expaintion and contraction, this can lead to premature seal failure.

With the combnation seals this cannot occur.

Re: Rubber Or Wax?

It seals the bottom of the toilet to the flange in the floor. Therefore no leaks. It's a round ring made of thick wax.

Re: Rubber Or Wax?

Then your pans must be different to ours. Over here the spigot comes out of the back of the pan about 4 or 5 inches above the ground and then either connects into a soil pipe running horizontally or you fit a 90 deg bend to connect into a soil pipe in the floor. All the connection are outside of the pan so its not such a neat look but it sure is easy to make the connections. All the fittings are now simple push fit with rubber seals.

Re: Rubber Or Wax?

Sorry guys, lost in translation I think. By pan I mean toilet, we tend to refer to the "pan" (the part you sit on) and the "cistern" (the part that fills with water), collectively called a "toilet", although toilet would generally refer to the room which contains the "toilet". We wont even start on the "fanny" question !

Anyways, the spigot/outlet comes out of the back off the pan instead of underneath, thats the difference.

Re: Rubber Or Wax?

Wow things are different across the pond! By the way (BTW) does your pan and cistern run on 120v like us, or 240v? .......Just kidding!....But seriously, back to the original question, do you use wax or rubber seals?
