Remove/replace Radiator
I'm putting together a bid for a plaster repair/paint job. One large section of failing plaster is directly behind a radiator, so I can't get to it. I need someone to remove (I guess 'cap off') the radiator, and come back a couple days later to replace. Is this something I need a licensed plumber to do, or will a 'handyman' suffice?
I know I'm not going to touch it! |

Re: Remove/replace Radiator
If it's a steam system, and the boiler is off, no problem for a handyman to R&R.
If it's a hot water system, the system will need to be drained down a bit to remove the radiator, and then when it's reinstalled, the system will need to be repressurized and that radiator bled. It is a very real possibility that a larger portion of the building will need the radiators bled also, depending on how much needed drained down to remove that radiator. |

Re: Remove/replace Radiator
Thanks for the info guys, but you must have missed this part:
I know my trade, and my own limitations. This isn't something I want to dick with and waste my own time trying to figure it out. If I screw something up, I don't want to have to be liable for it. Just like I hope you guys don't try to patch/touch up walls (*coughMDcough*). It is a very old historic home, waaaay expensive. I'd rather have someone who has done this before handle the headache. If I can't find someone, I'll tell the homeowner to find someone. |

Re: Remove/replace Radiator
I know. I thought you were trying to decide whether to hire a handyman or a plumber. In either case, I'd hire a plumber. It's just a little bit more simple of a job on a steam system, and a bit more comlex for hydronic.
I do understand that outside of the northeast, not all plumbers are also "heating guys". In the northeast, plumbing and heating are nearly the same trade, and most plumbing companies say "...plumbing and heating". In other areas you might need to get an HVAC man or a "furnace man" for such work. |

Want a professional job, hire a professional. Call a plumber.

Tell me about it! 12 hour day piping in a boiler replacement. Got a call this morning about a furnace duct system from a referral from another boiler and had to explain the difference. I think I really gotta get into it...make things less complicated to explain. |

Re: Remove/replace Radiator
If thats a historical home and that radiator has never been touched a plumber might have to bring out the big pipe wrenches to get that thing unhooked. MD. is rite where i live plumbers are also heating and airconditioning but the minute you go north its hvac. Suburbs north of Kankakee county....will,cook counties. Finally where i live my plumber feels comfortable working on those system in the old victorian homes but some guys don't.

OR if it's the baseboard type you need a pressing tool.
