Questions Shower Handle Inside

hello. I love the site hope it doesnt seem im just using it for questions but u know. Im re doing my own shower and taking my time and learning things like plumbing/electrical on my own house so I dont mess up else where.

My problem I have a 3 shower handle set up 1. hot handle 2. mid diverter 3. cold handle, All I did was take the old crappy handles off and they all came off but the Hot one. I finally got it off with some force and here's where my problem comes into the inside of the handle has the brass tube housing and then the plastic switch. Well I think the switch either broke inside or stripped out because the peice where I can attach the handle to with the screw all comes out but If i turn the water on it just shoots the piece (i can put the handle on) straight out the pipe. BTW I have copper pipes.

I can get behind the shower do I need to just buy a new plastic piece to put in or what? any idea's?
