PVC For Drinking Water

Situation, well water to the house in 1" PVC. some repipe was done in PVC. Supply of shared well water to lower rental property is PVC and some repipe there too. I say replace it, wife says it's been ok for 20 years. Pro plumber opinions ?

Just the thought of the taste of PVC makes me gag, replace it.

PVC for water distro not allowed by code in buildings where I'm at.

Re: PVC For Drinking Water

ron, it would be my guess that the distribution piping from the treatment plant, to the corp valve in the street, has some pvc main if not all of it in the line. it would be my guess that the majority of watermains installed in the US in the last 30 yrs has been PVC. i think it a far superior product over ductile iron from it's ability to withstand corrosive soil, to having higher flow rates than same sized ductile iron, to being an easier product to handle, install, and repair if necessary than ductile iron. the initial cost to purchase and install is considerably cheaper also. installed properly, it should have the same design life as ductile iron and copper.

After reading the post over, pvc outside the building is fine, keep it all, but if any is inside replace it.

Re: PVC For Drinking Water

It's a double wide and a single wide. I'm keeping the main underground supply lines and replacing the repairs. The single wide had a flex line come apart at the AS and it flooded so it's getting a complete copper repipe. The double wide can wait.
I've heard that PVC can develope toxic algea if water is left standing too long (?)

I appreciate the feedback.

Re: PVC For Drinking Water

I been in my present house for over 20 plus years and also have well water piped to the house via pvc. We switched to bottled water for drinking and cooking only a few years back. Everything else is with the well water. Have your water tested if you have any concerns. I had to make a few repairs over the years and I'm glad the line was pvc. Not being a plumber myself, but I wouldn't want anything less than schedule 40. Maybe some of the pros could jump in about that issue.

I know of one house with pvc from the meter. This a no-no? This was not schedule 40 either. That made me shake my head.
