PVC To Cast Iron Under Concrete

What is the proper way to make a transition from new vertical PVC drain to an existing horizontal Cast Iron drain that will be under a concrete basement floor? Also, what are the clean out requirements?

Re: PVC To Cast Iron Under Concrete

a mission clamp from cast to pvc or just a 4 band clamp will do also,
if the area remains exposed use a tee clean out (dandy clean out)
that should do it..

Re: PVC To Cast Iron Under Concrete

To clarify, I plan to run the new PVC down and below the concrete and make the connection to an existing Cast Iron line there. A mission clamp is still acceptable?

Also, the clean out will be above the concrete, with an access plate through the wall? Just a sanitary tee?

What ever happen to the no hub adapters, seems like everyone just goes with a fernco or no hub band, dont you think the no hub adapter with a no hub band look more professional. But i use the above also only because there isn't i no hub adapter to found anywheres in this area, who knows why were tthey done away with ?

Actully code requires the no hub adaptor when you transition between cast and plastic, when using a no-hub banded coupling.

Re: PVC To Cast Iron Under Concrete

Does Code require No Hub when going from PVC to PVC under a basement floor that will be covered with concrete, or is Fernco acceptable?

Is this a national code or local? I am in Ohio.

Under UPC, ferncos can be used, pipe can not be directly embedded in cement and must be protected where is passes through it, with pipe wrap of some sort.

Re: PVC To Cast Iron Under Concrete

So UPC allows the fernco under concrete for CI to PVC, provided it is isolated from the concrete? What is the expected life of a fernco in that environment???

Re: PVC To Cast Iron Under Concrete

I can tell you one thing, the neoprene rubber on a fernco is thick as schd 40 or better, and is the same rubber used in no-hub banded coupling, which are thin.

I've dug up many ferncos in the ground and they was no break down in the rubber, so take it anyway you like, some perfer no hub banded coupling but I perfer ferncos, just a preference.

Re: PVC To Cast Iron Under Concrete

Forgive my ignorance, we deal primarily in commerical design, large scale structural systems, usually not involved with the finer details of plumbing. We have a home remodel project with a similar situation. I am not well versed on terminology or methods. i think i get what you are saying, but i was hoping for a final clarification.

Our client wants to add a basement level bath. the drains will be run under the concrete floor slab (the slab will be cut at drain locations and then repoured over new drains) The exisitng drain is cast iron. the new drains pvc. obvioulsy a tee is required in the exisitng cast drain to accomodate the new pvs intersection.

Are you guys saying a section of the cast pipe can be removed, a pvc tee installed, fernco no-hub couplings can be used to connect the pvc to cast, and concrete can then be poured back over the drains and couplers providing they are wrapped with a pipe protector?

questions: aren't the clamps on the fernco couplers non-corrosive? if so, why does the pipe need to be isolated from the concrete with a pipe wrap? and is the pipe wrap a water/moisture tight material?

obviously we will contract a qualified plumbing contractor to do the work, but we are in design stage and were wondering if the rubber pipe connections with stailess steel clamps are acceptable under the slab.

thanks a lot, great info in this thread

1st question is yes, install a pvc wye, use fernco or plastic to no-hub adaptors with no-hub bainded couplings for the connections.

Next questions, clamps are non corrosive, but pipe is not, so it can not be directly embedded in concrete, anytype of wrap will do, you only need the barrier between the concrete and pipe.
