Pop up drain plug

Help, daughter moved into a house with a pop up drain plug in the bathtub. It is one that you push down to close and then push down again to allow it to pop up. The problem is that when it is down to close it is still about an 1/8" off the drain lip allowing the water to leak out rapidly. How do I adjust this to get it to close when pushed down. I tried just turning it clockwise but it didn't seem to make a difference. Obviously I am not a plumber and have no clue how to adjust the drain stopper. Help!!!
