Plumbing Mystery

Try and solve this one: I just replaced a delta single handle faucet because when you turn on the water unless you raise the handle fully on,the handle will slowly shut itself off. The replacement faucet is a moen single handle and guess what? it does the same thing. The hot side appears to be a little worse the the cold. I checked the pressure at the angle stop and get 70lbs on both hot and cold. The volume of water on either side is lower when compared to the shower. The branch lines to the sink are 1/2" and are about 40 feet from where service(3/4") enters house.?????????????????

Re: Plumbing Mystery

Based off what you gave...the supply lines are almost rusted shut therefor not enough volume to keep the handle in the open position

Re: Plumbing Mystery

The weight of the handle is dragging the new cartridge down, in a month the sediment in the water will stiffen up the cartridge and the problem will go away. You could have fixed the Delta by tightening the tension ring on the ball.

A Delta handle should not move from the position it is placed in regardless of water pressure. You could close the angle stops, open the faucet however much you wish and the handle should not move. I don't know about Moen because I never use it and rarely come across it (although I do have a Moen ks faucet in my own house) but I have to believe it should be the same.

Delta handles will fall when the adjusting ring is too loose but generally they will start leaking before they get that loose. That's my diagnosis. The adjusting ring needed tightening.

Re: Plumbing Mystery

Moen faucets have a friction ring on the cartridge to help keep the handle to stay in the on position, without it, it can cause the handle to drop and close off on it's own.

Re: Plumbing Mystery

I was kinda hoping it was something a bit more interesting than a silly adjustment ring.

How bout this. The home owner broke off the original handle in a drunken rage, called Manny the illegal alien handy man and he installed whatever he could steal, which was a much larger / heavier handle. The additional weight causes the valve to close as there is not enough tension to keep in the on position.

Man I must be bored....

Re: Plumbing Mystery

New angle stops were installed along with new supply tubes. The moen faucet worked fine at another location. I probably will install new branch lines (copper) to the sink.

Re: Plumbing Mystery

That's a strange one. Soft water?

The Delta stem can be tightened with the adjustable ring. The Moen faucet cannot be tightened.

That's a lot of work! KillerToiletSpi was right...I've seen the same thing with Moen (never had that problem with Delta, though). But with Moen, you can wipe some of the excess grease off the cartridge and that usually takes care of it.
